The way Jim crow laws striped citizens of their rights is, the colored race was deprived of many of their civil rights such as separation of schools and prison cells. Even their freedom of speech which is the 1rst amendment was limited for them.“Any person… who shall be guilty of… suggestions in favor of social equality … fine exceeding five hundred dollars” (SB page 198 Law # 18) This means that anybody trying to publicise their opinion about social equality will get fined. This is totally against the 1rst amendment of freedom of speech. I think This is very ludicrous because the 1-10 amendments is what america was founded on.“The warden shall see that the white convicts shall have separate apartments for both eating and sleeping from the…
Jim Crows laws enforced racial segregation in the south of the USA between the end of reconstruction which was during the Civil War in 1877 and also during the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950’s. Jim Crow is a minstrel routine that was performed in the beginning of 1828 by its author. In the late 1870’s Southern Legislatures passed laws requiring separation of whites from “persons of colour” in schools and public transportation. The segregation was then extended to parks, cemeteries, theaters, and restaurants. This was to prevent whites and blacks to being equal. In 1887 to 1892 nine states (one was louisiana) which they passed laws requiring separation in public. This included railroads, and streetcars. These laws affected…
Before reading the preface my view of “tough on crime” drug polices was that if drug offenders are charged for a drug crime it is considered a misdemeanor. I thought when offenders are release from prison they were mandatory to attend rehabilitation program to receive appropriate drug treatments. However, the “tough on crime” polices resulted in the large increase of federal and state prison for mass incarceration of black American in the war on drugs. My perspective on drug enforcement changed due to reading the preface of “The New Jim Crow”. I did not realize that drug war in ghetto communities was not because of where the violent offenders are located or people uses drugs. The drug war was focused was the increase of drug arrests on black…
Jim Crow started after Federal troops pulled out of the South and white supremacist Democrats “redeemed” their state governments, meaning that former Republican state legislatures during the Reconstruction era were voted out by Southern whites and voted in the would be dominate Democrats for decades. The first laws pushed by southern Democrats were intended to suppress blacks first and foremost, and also stop at any means their vote. The dominating ideal of white supremacy still engulfed the South after the Civil War and Jim Crow laws acted as the embodiment of these racist ideals. To keep segregation and the separation of races in all matters of life, such as transportation, housing, and education also kept blacks economically and socially suppressed so that southern black resistance was nearly impossible. Combine this with Republicans dropping civil rights from their platform after the 1870’s, and blacks were left in a police state where the only help they could find was from their own communities.…
Although new additions to the Constitution, as well as an increase in social developments, did help to add to a positive revolution, there were some bad aspects of social development such as the KKK and Jim Crow Laws that put a damper on the country. In Document I, the reader is presented with a very famous image in the history of the black race. The overall purpose of this image is to represent southern rebellion or resistance to the developments of reconstruction such as the 14th and 15th Amendments which try to promote equality regardless of race. This image counters the revolution by promoting terrorist-like activities such as lynching and the targeting of helpless victims like the degraded race the freedmen were during this time. The Jim Crow laws created in 1877, which enforced racial segregation, along with the horrific acts as seen in Document I by the KKK demonstrates the anger and continual rebellion of the white citizens which prevented such a wonderful and peaceful revolution in American history from being 100%…
The name for Jim Crow Laws is believed to be derived from an old minstrel routine. Actor Thomas Dartmouth would perform routines as a clumsy, dimwitted African American slave. “Jim Crow” then became a widely used derogatory term used for blacks. Jim Crow laws were appointed for the reason of power, the power of one race over another. The laws were initiated to create a racial caste system in the south. This era of Jim Crow, which lasted nearly a century, led to a struggle for all African Americans. The Jim Crow Laws affected African Americans by keeping with the “separate but equal” doctrine and by playing a key role in the novel To Kill A Mockingbird.…

The Black Codes were laws in the United States after the Civil War with the intent of limiting the basic human rights and civil liberties of blacks as much as possible. Black Codes is used most often to refer to laws passed by Southern states at the end of the Civil War to control the labor, housing and other activities of newly-freed slaves.…
Jim Crow laws are a complex yet derogatory system of laws and customs designed to segregate those who pertain to differing races, thus depriving American citizens of the most fundamental of civil rights. Even the name itself provides a view of the sheer amount of discrimination these laws evoke - they were “named after a popular 19th century minstrel song that stereotyped African Americans” (rise and fall of Jim Crow PBS). The fact that the name itself comes from a cruelly comedic song designed to stereotype African Americans shows that these laws are prejudiced and unfair to those who are rightful citizens of America - no matter if they’re labeled as a race other than Caucasian. In short, Jim Crow laws clearly limit the rights of American citizens, and even the name itself publicly states the disrespectfulness towards African-Americans that lived in the…
By the 1890s, the freedom that was given to slaves after the Civil War was abolished by the Jim Crow Laws. The Jim Crow Laws commenced around 1830 and were legalized in 1910 by every state apart of the former Confederacy. Signs and posters were placed to separate races from places of recreation, water fountains, hotels, restrooms, and modes of transportation during the Jim Crow era. The Jim Crow Laws were so highly enforced that over 3,000 victims were lynched during the time of 1889 and 1930. Violence towards blacks grew during the Jim Crow Era. Groups like the Ku Klux Klan, that reached over 6 million members, supported mob violence towards them.…
Alexander talks about a person named Jarvis Cotton and his grandparents even there grandparents were not able to vote even after having seven generations of his family live in the united states. His grandfather was beaten to death for trying to vote and great-grandfather was threatened y a group of people called Ku Klux Klan and his father alone had to take various test to vote..Today it is perfectly legal to discriminate against criminals in nearly all the ways that it was once legal to discriminate against African Americans. When you lived back then as a african american you were considered a criminal and were striped of all natural rights. In todays society once you’re labeled a felon many rights are taken away or there is a lot of discrimination like, housing discrimination, denial of the right to vote, denial of educational opportunity, denial of food stamps and other public benefits, and exclusion from jury service are suddenly legal.. Michelle Alexander says “We have not ended racial caste in America; we have merely redesigned it”…

Not only does ideas and beliefs create unfair living to some, racism has been exercised through political power (Omi). Statistics have shown that people of different ethnicities are less likely to receive substantial justice or fair sentencings when being trialed. Racial bias is currently reoccuring in our justice systems. Racial injustice can’t be achieved until we work together to prove the past isn’t the present, and we all have equal opportunities and accept all. “The laws we now see, are in need of a course correction” (King). The Declaration of Independence was a vision for America stating that the people would be free and equal, this being said America's government and justice system are meant to protect the US, and the citizens of the country. They should not have to question if their country is against them (Racial Justice). Jim crow laws were created for a reason, it is important to know your rights in order to fight against unfair treatment in society and the justice system if need…
