Jim Miller's Poem 'Brier Sermon'
Jim Miller's "Brier Sermon" was very eye opening to read. I loved how he pointed out that we always want more and are looking for the next best thing. This is true in every moment of our lives. I know for me personally in high school I was dying to be in college and now that I am here I am already looking forward to the future again. It is hard to remember to take in the beauty of something we see everyday. "Brier Sermon" also reminded me of the Ron Rash poem, "Mill Village". This poem spoke of how when people moved they tried to remain faithful to the mountains. The speaker in the poem would long for home and what he had left behind but before too long he took down the picture once he was accustom to his new life. Many of the poems spoke about

As I read the poem Theme for English B, I couldn’t help but notice this was a personal narrative about a young black man life, where he was born, where he attended school. He was born in Winston Salem, North Carolina during the time of the Jim Crew era when there were only few blacks’ men who were educated. He started his education in Winston Salem North Carolina and some in Durham North Carolina. Later moved on to New York City where he attended college where there were only a few blacks who could afford to attend the colleges. He was the only colored in his class, he realized that even though his skin was different the other students like some of the same things, eat, sleep understand life and listen to music.…

It is clear from the word “I” that at this point Countee is no longer referencing Greek Gods and classic sonnet’s structure, but rather is digging deep into his own experiences. Countee marvels at the fact that God made him both a poet and black. Being black and a poet may be contradictory to white America at the time, and our speaker finds this concept central to his existence. Countee’s wonderment could be addressing how he “marvels” at the fact that despite being enslaved in the South, the turn of the century saw blacks reestablishing their identity in America. On the other hand, Cullen is marveling about why a God who is good could be so cruel to give a black poet the ability to “sing” in a world that ignores them.…

I chose the poem, "This is a Wonderful Poem,” made by David Wagoner. The setting is that you are walking down the sidewalk and you find a mysterious man. As you realize that no friendly person is around he is contemplating what he wants from you and how to get it. The guy won't take will have it so you are faced with some options. Will you run away and try to forget, try to get around him, or hurt him and run for some help.…

Thru analyzing my life before, during and my impending retirement, it revolved around my boundaries of my idealism. Who I am and what brings me happiness is that of helping people realize their potential and developing it. My desire for success and happiness had to include the happiness and success of the members of my team. As I sought to develop myself as a leader and manager and bringing my peers along with me sometimes by force (lol) on this journey it gave us new experiences and growth opportunities. It exposed us new avenues to explore and enlightened hidden virtues and skills that would not have been discovered if we didn't take the risk at that point in our careers. I constantly tell the people who work in close collaboration with me, that it is never too late to diagnose your life and future career goals! Analyze what you stand for, who you are, and use that discovery to develop yourself into what you want to be. We all have talents and skills we have not even tapped into and being open to nurturing and blueprinting them can only reap the rewards of personal and team…

Sometimes we just need to stop always thinking about our regrets and our future and realize how far we really have come with our own individual lives. Everything that we do, everything that we build and write, helps us discover and research new opportunities and a possible path to a career.…

Growing up I attended Elementary School, Middle School, and High School, but after High School I ended up taking a year off and attending a Christian gap year program called Link Year. I moved to Branson, Missouri and spent a year strengthening my foundation and growing in my walk with the Lord. Little did I know that after attending this gap year program and taking a year off, that it would make my desire for a college education shrink. Why should I attend college? What was the point of getting a degree when I could go out into the world and work on furthering the Kingdom? Doing things that when I die would matter most to me. These were questions I would ask myself. I didn't think getting a degree would matter or effect those desires and goals I had or would put a limit on them. But wait, could they?…

Back then I really had known idea why am here, or what am supposed to be doing. It seemed that all I cared about was materialized through conviction and faith. I prayed and it seemed to happen. Likewise, I worked hard to reach my goals. I would live with the philosophy of, live one day at a time (cited from the book entitled: Happiness Now by: Andrew Matthews).Rushing of reaching your goals would be dangerous. Since then I have not worried of getting old because I know things would happen one day at a time. Taking my master’s degree was just a mere dream of mine 8 years ago. One of the reasons is I cannot support my sibling for his education if I take mastered unit. Now, that he is already graduated from college I have confidence to take this step as well as to profound my knowledge and be a bona fide guidance counselor. “When we are children we seldom think of the future. This innocence leaves us free to enjoy ourselves as few adults can. The day we fret about the future is the day we leave our childhood behind.” - Patrick Rothus. Life is full of twists and turns, highs and lows, hopes and dreams. The beginning of life starts in pure innocence, with every individual trying to figure out who can be trusted and how the world functions. Life concludes with memories of all one has experienced, along with feelings of pride in what has been accomplished and regrets at what has slipped by. Growing up, however, is done in a series of stages. Each stage of life is filled with relationships, new experiences, issues, and challenges. In order to move into the next stage of life, it is vital for individuals to accomplish certain tasks and attain different points of view through the information that is gained.…

    Expectations

Enough of this philosophy talk (it’s boring, ain’t it?) As a student, what do we expect? Well, of course, good grades for one thing—math whiz, human Dictaphone, living dictionary and all that. But then again, who doesn’t? As a student, it has been ingrained into our minds the chain reaction of “study hard, get good grades, get into a prestigious university, get a good job with a high income, retire in luxury.” This is a sterling example of the “perfect life”. Everyone expects their life to play out the same way. It seems to be like checking off a “to-do” list, no ups or downs. Is this life, really? You only live once, treasure life while you can. Why isn’t anyone dreaming about being an Olympic athlete, bringing glory to their country, or becoming the future female politician? Why aren’t we taught to live life to its fullest? Why are we taught to expect our lives to be lived in total comfort and in our own benefit?…

There’s never a good time to sit down and think about what I want to accomplish in life.
