Jimmy Carter served as president of the United States from January 20,1977 to January 20,1981. He had many accomplishments when he was president, but some of his major accomplishments were the Panama canal treaties and the treaty of peace between Egypt and Israel. Carter also created the treaty of SALT 11 with the soviet union and the diplomatic relations with the people’s Republic of China. On the domestic side Carter created a new department of energy and created major educational programs under
a new department of education. Carter also created the environmental protection legislation, including the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act.
Carter is also known as a hero for being caring, he helped many people. After being president In 1981 he went on to be the University Distinguished Professor at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia and shortly after he founded the Carter Center. It is a non-profit organization, Carter created this organization to resolve conflict, promote democracy, protect human rights, and prevent disease. The Carter center is also trying to stop Guinea worm disease, which is poised to be the second human disease in history to be eradicated. Carter volunteers once a week for Habitat for Humanity, it is a non-profit organization that helps needy people in the United States and around the world to build homes.
On December 10, 2002 Jimmy Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He won the award because of his decades of untiring effort to help many people around the world and to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts and to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.
Carter is known as a hero because of his actions when he was president and after president.
