While the mother is a hard worker daughter is the opposite, lazy.
It states in the story “...I could be lazy and get away with mistakes…” which means that she could be lazy and not get in trouble because she wasn’t able to practice on the piano. Furthermore the mother is uninterested in what her daughter wants her to be, but, on the other hand the daughter is uninterested that her daughter doesn't want to be who her mother wants her to be. It states in the story that “... my mother thought I could be a chinese Shirley Temple.” which means that the mother wanted her daughter to be the chinese Shirley Temple and not asking her daughter what she wanted to be. In the same way the daughter is uninterested in what her mother wants her to be. It states “... couldn't stand it anymore.” which means that she didn't want to do it anymore, she was done. The mother is also
competitive. She wants her daughter to win at everything. The author states “Our problem is worser than yours...” which means that the mom is bragging about a lie so that she sound like Jing Mei is good at things. Another way that they kind of the same is that they are both determined. The daughter is determined to fail. It states “... I was so determined not to try…” which means that she didn’t even want to try at it. The mother is determined to have her daughter succeed. It also states “ The tests got harder…” which means that the mother is pushing her more and more to succeed. One way that they differ is that the daughter is overwhelmed with what the mother wants her to be. In the story it states “The tests got harder…” which also means that the daughter was filled with stress on the tests. In conclusion, those are some of the ways that the mother and her daughter, Jing Mei differ.
