Jiri Kylian's Six Dances Music Analysis

December 5, 2016, the dancers of Abraham in Motion brought Jiri Kylian’s Petite Mort and Six Dances to stage in a new and powerful way. Choreographer, Kyle Abraham married the life of men and women during the 17th century to the modern life of the 21st century. As opposed to the original piece, Abraham’s female dancers were more independent in the sense of needing their male companions to portray their life. Tonight’s showcased dancers were: Vinson Fraley; current student at Tisch School of the Arts, Tamisha Guy; recently selected as one of Dance Magazine’s Top 25 to Watch, Catherine Ellis Kirk; a graduate of New York University Tisch School of the Arts, and Jeremy Jae Neal; Western Michigan University alum. During the times of no music accompaniment, the audience was left to use their imagination to interpret what was happening onstage, making Six Dances on of the highlights of the night. Steering away from Kylian’s initial vision, while using the same choreography, Abraham set his female dancers free. Tamsiha Guy used her face and physicality to her advantage in the piece. Guy’s strong presence and resistance to her male partner compared the life of women in the 17th century to the life of women in the 21st century. Despite the major changes between the two centuries, women are still trying to push the envelope and break barriers in society, but they have more power and opportunities in their hands. Guy used the choreography as a PSA to let it be known that women are still in search of independence and freedom from men. The corset dress is a mandatory part of the costume in Six Dances. While the black dress is able to leave the female dancers, the corset does not, applying that the lifestyle of women is the carved inside of them and will never leave
