JJ Thomson
JJ Thomson’s full name is Joseph John Thomson. Thomson was born on December 18, 1856. He was born near Manchester, England. Emma Thomson was his mother and she came from a family that owned a company that made produced cotton. Joseph James Thomson was his father and he was a bookseller. Thomson’s father wanted him to become and engineer. He went to his first college at the age of 14. Later, he attended Trinity College at Cambridge with a small scholarship. Thomson started to study cathode rays in 1894. JJ Thomson discovered the electrons which are negatively charged particles. To discover the elections in the atom, JJ Thomson had to put in a lot of thought, time and hard work. Thomson did a series of experiments to test his hypothesis. In the first experiment, he tried to prove his hypothesis using the field of magnetic. There were slits in the tube and there it could measure the electrical charge. He learned that the magnet turned the charge away. In the second experiment, he used an electric field to deflect the negative charge. What he thought would be the outcome was actually the outcome and this lead to more research and experiments. In his third experiment, he worked at trying to find the nature of the particles. After lots of work he found out the mass and ratio of the particle. Later, JJ Thomson designed his own model of the atom with elections in a pool outside of the nucleus. JJ Thomson was the first to find out about the structure inside of an atom while most thought that you couldn’t get to the inside of the atom. Due to discovery that he made, he is known as one of the grandfathers of modern physics.

A new atomic theory, in which all atoms of the same element are identical to one another and equal in mass, was proposed by the scientist Dalton. Although the theory had its flaws and was simple, it was revolutionary. Scientists became able to study the actual structure and mass of atoms after the discovery of radioactivity. Soon, isotopes were discovered, as atoms of the same element which have been built up to have different masses.…

Werner Heisenberg worked right around the time of James Chadwick. He discovered that neutrons, electrons and protons do not have a direct connection. His discoveries introduced atomic physics. He found out that the number of neutrons are not always the same. One thing led to another and the discoveries of Heisenberg helped to create the nuclear bomb.…

Although Joseph John (J.J.) Thomson (1856 - 1940) was mainly a physicist, his discoveries are closely connected to the chemical community. Thomson used Crookes high vacuum cathode ray tube in his discovery of electrons. He found the green beam produced by the cathode ray tube was a completely negatively charged material. Experimenting with different electrically charged plates and magnets in the cathode ray tube and observing the deflection of the rays he had enough evidence to say that particles smaller than atoms existed. By doing this experiment multiple times he compiled enough data to conclude that the mass of one of these particles, which he called an electron, was lighter than an atom of hydrogen by around 2,000 times. He also found the ratio of charge to mass (e/m) would be the same for any electron.…

(McPhee, 2010) The scientists of the 19th centuries renewed their interest in the Atomic Theory •John Dalton suggested that all matter was composed of small particles - atoms, each element had a different atom and a different atomic weight, theorized that atoms could not be created or destroyed in chemical reactions (1804) •In his attempt to classify the elements by principles, Dmitri Mendeleev arranged the elements by their atomic weight, discovering the existence of periodicity of the atoms (1869) •J.J. Thomson discovered electrons through his cathode ray experiment and proved that atoms were divisible(1897) (McPhee, 2010), ("A brief history," 2005) 20th century concepts and discoveries •Earnest Rutherford discovered that there was a small, dense positively charged nucleus, predicted the existence of neutrons, stated that electrons move rapidly in the empty space around the nucleus (1909-11) •In continuation of his experiments J.J. Thompson determined that all particles had charges that were multiples of the same number •In 1913 Robert Millikan accurately determined the mass of election…

Six scientists were chosen to see which one had made the greatest contribution to our current understanding of the atom’s structure. Our knowledge of an atom’s appearance and structure have evolved from years and years of development and contribution from many different scientists. Scientist Ernest Rutherford had been the best contributor to the understanding of the atomic structure. Why Rutherford was chosen is because his work had information on protons, neutrons, and electrons, the main components that make up the atom, showed what the atom looks like when the three are put together, and had also been the discoverer of the nucleus which is the one of them most important parts of the atom’s structure.…

William Paterson (Patterson) was born in County Antrim, Ireland, in 1745. When he was almost 2 years of age, his family emigrated to America, disembarking at New Castle, DE. While the father traveled about the country, apparently selling tinware, the family lived in New London, other places in Connecticut, and in Trenton, NJ. In 1750 he settled in Princeton, NJ. There, he became a merchant and manufacturer of tin goods. His prosperity enabled William to attend local private schools and the College of New Jersey (later Princeton). He took a B.A. in 1763 and an M.A. 3 years later.…

Although John Dalton was the scientist to discover the first scientific theory of an atom, J.J Thomson was next to research the atom. While evaluating Daltons work, he found that atoms are not indivisible. He experimented and found that when the atom is excited by an electrical current it causes the atom to break apart into two parts. Then to further explain his findings, Thomson created a model which was called the Plum-pudding atom. In the model the “plums” are the negatively charged electrons, while the “pudding” is the mass of positive…
