The daughter of a teen mother, she was shuttled back and forth between her mother, her grandmother, and eventually her father. Living with her grandmother, Oprah was beaten regularly. When she turned 6 she went to live with her mother, who was a maid and worked long hours, and as a result Oprah was neglected. When she was 9 years old she was left in the care of a 19- year old cousin who raped her. She continued to suffer sexual abuse at the hands of several relatives, including her mother’s boyfriend, until the age of 13 when she ran away from home. At 14 years old Oprah became pregnant, moved in with her Father and suffered the loss of her child shortly after birth. As is evident, Oprah faced some of the harshest of tribulations, all before she even hit high school. Oprah went on to become a news anchor and award winning actress before starting her own talk show, magazine, and TV channel as well as many other accolades that are too numerous to name. Oprah has taken every disadvantage and hardship she has faced and used them to turn herself in the the richest self-made women, and the first and only black billionaire. Oprah has said that she is thankful for her early hardships because it made building and earning her success so much more rewarding. Many people accredit Oprah’s success to her ability to empathize and relate to her audience, which are traits that she attributes to her struggles. In addition, she uses her success to impact the lives of others through her many philanthropical

Overcoming Obstacles Makes Better Individuals “Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome” (Booker T. Washington). Obstacles are a required part of life if you wish to grow and develop. If you do not face challenges, you will not become a strong person. Individuals pushing to achieve the goals we set and overcoming the roadblocks ahead of us are what make us who we are. In the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton and in my own personal experience, people encounter obstacles, and eventually overcome them.…

Her grandmother raised her for the first six years of her life, while her teenage mother was looking for work up north. Whilst living with her grandma, it was very primitive and poverty was a normality. Albeit she didn’t have an ideal upbringing, she was able to get by with her grandmother by her side. Oprah was taught how to read very early and by the time she was three years old, she was already singing bible verses in church.…

Adversity is either chosen or brought upon someone; either way, the obstacle is either overcome or not. No matter wealth, age, or location, all people face adversity for it is synonymous with life. Life is the struggle for survival and success and order, while adversity is the representation of disorder and failure. Without either, it would be impossible to differentiate one’s achievements from one’s failures. Overcoming adversity is the basis of all great, successful people similarly to how concrete and steel is the foundation of all astonishing architectural structures.…
