Joanna’s actions affect Sue in the story because she is trying to help her get better because Joanna is sick. Joanna is counting leaves instead of letting Sue help her. ‘There goes another leaf,’ said Joanna, keeping her eyes on the window. ‘ No, I don’t want any soup. That leaves just four. I want to see the last one fall before it gets dark. Then i’ll go, too.’ (pg. 18). According to the evidence, Joanna is paying no attention and doesn’t seem to care about getting better. She is more worried about looking at leaves. She wants to keep her eyes on the window the whole time because there’s nothing else to do.
