It helps, but it isn’t necessarily required. You had to go through training specific for the job that you end up going into in the beginning, but, even then they tell you that you can’t really grasp the info by just showing up for the training alone. You have to learn on the jobs. You learn where everything is by getting lost a few times. You find out what’s the best way to wrap food up by doing it several times. You learn how to make swirls at the frozen custard stand by failing an insane amount of times.
From this job shadowing, I could confidently say that, while the Henry Ford is a great first job experience to have, It’s not necessarily somewhere I’d like to spend the rest of my life working. Museums are where I’m most in my element, but I have bigger plans for the future. Being around so much history might help me gain some ideas, but if I stay there, they won’t be put into action.
