Often times Authors use literary elements in their stories to send a message through their works of literature. In the short story “Johanna “ by Jane Yolen uses personification and irony to convey the message that “sometimes one may have to risk their life for the life of a loved one. And this theme can be seen throughout the story. THis story takes place during the winter season in a wooded area. Johanna’s mother wasn't well and her mother told her to never leave the forest but she had to do what is right. so she left and started her journey to see the “doctor” who lives in a clearing at the edges of the forest. Her mother warned her not to go into the forest a night for her father did the same and he never returned.

    Irony in Tobias Wolff's "Hunter's in the Snow" and Diane Munro's "How I Met My Husband"

    Irony expresses and often underlines the contrast between two opposite concepts creating an indirect, more sophisticated method of communication. Irony is as efficient in a literary work, as the reader can perceive it. Therefore, often times the reader must carefully analyze the material, reading it repeatedly if necessary, in order to fully understand the author’s message and intent. Tobias Wolff and Alice Munro employ irony in their short stories in attempt to surprise the readers, giving them an opportunity for discovery. In Wolff’s “Hunters in the Snow”, irony acts as a tragicomedy agent, but its role is mainly to reveal the true nature of the protagonists’ characters. On the other hand Munro’s use of irony gives her story, “How I Met My Husband”, a nice and funny finale, suggesting coming of age through epiphany and also the transition from phantasy to reality. Hence, irony is used differently in the two stories, such that in Wolff’s story it is a repetitive theme that keeps the reader engaged, while in Munro’s story irony provides the punch-line ending.…

    The instinctive need for humanity to belong is through acceptance of one through relationships and their social status in society. When an individual seeks acceptance in the wider world in order to belong, it is up to them as to whether or not they are accepting of others. This idea is challenged as society is the boundary preventing an individual from trying to belong. This notion is expressed throughout the play Rainbows End by Jane Harrison and the film The Sapphires directed by Wayne Blair. Whereby both composers use various techniques to explore the belief that one seeks to belong through relationships and culture. An individual may feel that to truly belong they must discard all differing thoughts. In a way finding a way to be accepted is the focal point of belonging. This idea is demonstrated in the play Rainbows End, in the “Waters rising” scene whereby the audience is under the impression that an individual seeks to belong through acceptance within a relationship. Further In the scene, we see Errol asking Dolly to move into the city with him, through the exchange of dialogue between Errol and Dolly. Errol says “I want you to come away with me” with dolly responding “Away?” and Errol “Yes to the city”. Through the use of a demanding tone in Errol’s voice “I want you” indicates Errol is able to offer a better life for dolly. Symbolising the idea that acceptance in a relationship can make one feel as though they belong, to the point where they can live together as one. As a result, the viewers can understand that both Errol and Dolly are accepting of each other and the different worlds they come from. In a similar way, Wayne Blair explores the idea that a sense of belonging can emerge where there is a perception of acceptance without limitations.
