Executive Summary
While leading and managing within my area of responsibility, John Adair’s Action Centered Leadership model was adopted in the running of my team. The model emphasized that in accomplishing an assigned task, developing the individual as well as building and maintaining the team is essential. I advised him to take the girl to the staff clinic while I contacted the Human Resources division on his behalf to see how he could recover the money spent in the private clinic. This I did and gave him some money to lessen his financial burden until he is reimbursed. I also gave him some time off to attend to this personal challenge. His attitude to work and job output improved tremendously thereafter.
Lessons learnt
• I learnt that I didn’t show traits of leadership initially as I allowed the situation to degenerate to the point of affecting the job before calling the attention of the staff to the observed issue.
• Interpersonal relationship and influence are very important in the work place because without them it may not have been easy to get him approval for reimbursement.
• During the interview, I was told that I was always serious-minded and unapproachable which was the reason he couldn’t tell me earlier.
Going forward
• I will be more flexible in my leadership style because a good leader needs to play different leadership roles as the situation demands.
• I also would put on a smiling outlook, be more friendly, open-minded and accessible so that I wouldn’t be perceived as been
