“Aw, man, we could have run those guys, sure”(52). This significant quote from the main character Derrick Bowen in the book Pull by Kevin Waltman gives the reader an idea of how the character was like in the beginning. In addition, the beginning of the book also gives the author several opportunities to have Derrick go through periods of changes later on throughout the story. For this reason, the author is foreshadowing the changes he will, later on, make with Derrick. Pull is about Derrick Bowen a Junior at Marion High with college offers from Division one schools. When he is on the court, he is one of the best high school basketball players in the nation, but injuries and personal problems are keeping him…

The construction company started working on the pavement of the sidewalks the summer after Emily’s father’s death. John Wilson in the beginning is an honest man trying to make a better life for his family back home in Scotland. My opinion of John Wilson started out as him use being a nicenguyntrying to help everyone out. If one had to portray a bully, John’s character perfectly sets the mould for it. He is instantly hated by the entire group the moment he starts speaking to them because of his general attitude towards everyone. He shows no respect for authority as he starts destroying school property the moment he steps foot into the class room. He has an air of reckless carelessness about him which he portrays through his body language and attire. He makes it very clear to everyone present that he is not looking to make any friends and begins to berate and pick on Claire’s character, whom he has feelings for.…
Chapter 4:” My father was mean, and he was dangerous to trick.” When I read this I was sad, because when john begins to fit in he cant even feel comfortable in his own home or feel open enough with his dad to communicate things.…
He is a sophomore in a New York City high school. He is terribly dissatisfied with his life and misbehaves in interesting ways to try to give meaning to his own existence. He appears to have great potential and wants to be an actor. Like most teens, he will eventually discover that he, and he alone, makes his life whatever it will become. John is a complicated guy. First of all, he has a real problem with any kind of authority. He is in constant conflict with his father; he lies to his teachers and refers to them as "retarded." In fact, he lies to pretty much everybody, except Lorraine. In school he spends his time setting off firecrackers in the bathroom and playing pranks on substitutes, though he says those days are behind him now. Despite disliking authority figures and school, he's really smart and can get good grades when he wants to. However, more often he uses his intelligence, good looks, and charm to manipulate people. Lorraine tells us that John is "extremely handsome" (2), and John immodestly agrees: "Like Lorraine told you, I really am very handsome and I do have fabulous eyes" (3). John writes that he's "going to be a great actor" (3), and, with his good looks and imagination, we can well believe it. John also has a softer, compassionate side, and thinks deeply about the meaning of life and death. Lorraine tells us that John would be "the last person on earth" (2) to show that he has compassion, and that he pretends he doesn't care about anything in the world. He is only fifteen, but is already a heavy drinker and a heavy smoker. Let's break this down:John and his ParentsJohn does not get along with his parents, especially his father, whom he refers to as "Bore." One of the first things we learn…
On the other hand the protagonist speaks very fondly of John and expresses that he does everything in well meaning: Dear John! He loves me very dearly, and hates to have me sick. In this way, the portrayal of John and the male gender role is not antagonistic as such, which gives room to nuanced reflections about male and female gender roles in that period of time. Yet in spite of that, the protagonist still shows signs of…
Throughout both the film and short story “The Yellow Wallpaper, John is portrayed as the villain, or antagonist. He is viewed in this way because his treatment of the narrator, or his wife, goes terribly wrong. His actions prove that he had good intentions for his wife the entire time, but his controlling…
