Christianity had been adopted as Rome’s official religion. Years after this the Anglo-Saxdon’s did not want to convert to Christianity because it reminded them of the Romans. Eventually soon after the sixth century one by one they all began to convert to Christianity from worshiping the Pagan Norse God.…
It was a sunny day in Piedmont Park of Atlanta, GA where a miserly man named Jake Smith could be found arguing with his girlfriend Jodi Lee about rent for their apartment. He and his girlfriend were notorious for fighting each other amongst others and bringing their problems to the public. Everyone in the city knew the secrets they kept from one another as well as the abuse their dog had taken from their anger. After the altercation the two parted ways and Jake Smith got in his Camry and began down the crowded street.…
The entire cast of characters in the Scandinavian epic tale Beowulf all possess archetypal qualities that make them less complex in psychological development than the standard characters in the majority of literature in existence. Beowulf, the hero from the land of the Geats, acts as a representation of good, while each of the monsters he consecutively faces are forms of evil. Since Beowulf appears to be an unstoppable force for the good of the people, it would be difficult to see how he could not be an ideal hero. However, archetypes are not perfect; they lack the depth of character development and only act as the standard form of something. Beowulf still falls victim to mankind’s failings, such as the desire to be famous and to be remembered forever. He wants nothing more than to have his name be sacred and his image godly. The word ideal means “a conception of something in its perfection”. With that in mind, Beowulf is not an ideal hero because, like every man with power, he contains flaws that make him far from a standard of perfection.…
Beowulf, the best warrior in Geatland, fights numerous enemies for King Hrothgar and his people in Daneland. Monsters are no match for his strength and skill in battle. However, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. fought a different kind of battle, against racism on the other side of the world and in a different era. This leader of the civil rights movement had his hands full with this major problem. So how could these two people possibly be alike? Beowulf and Dr. King are similar because they are both loyal, courageous, and strong.…
When someone hurts your feelings, what do you do? Do you let that steal the joy God has given you? Or do you allow your imagination and your feelings run wild? The Gospel of Luke tells us what we should do when people hurt us: “But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.…
After thinking about the past years of my life I have found few major moments of joy; which just goes to show how rare they are and that if we do not recognize them they will just fly on by. Occurrences such as these are something that need to be held on to and cherished, and that is just what I have done.…
The epic poem Beowulf is a memorable because opens to the Anglo-Saxon literature. It is a synthesis between to the Greek, Latin, Germanic and Christian Literature. Beowulf is an imaginative poem that realizes a deep human drama as the fleeting of existence.…
Your words can hurt people, even if you are just joking. Many people say stuff, and think that it won’t have an affect on the person. Just because someone said something about a person doesn’t make it true. Anything you say can have an affect on someone. Like in the story “The Good Samaritan”, a man was injured and instead of a preacher helping him a Samaritan helped him.…
There are plenty of characters in the epic poem “Beowulf” but none are as dynamic as Beowulf himself. As the main character and protagonist, he is thoroughly developed throughout the poem. While some of his traits jump right out at you (confidence, strength, bravery), other are buried and subtle. Beowulf is wise, compassionate, and honorable and these characteristics shape the entire poem.…
* The tales would have been popular with people of all ranks and ages and would have been told at village fairs by local storytellers as well as in the household of the kings by wandering scops or poets.…
Our original vision of this culture and society at the time of Beowulf was one of honor, loyalty, strength, and pride in oneself. Richard Wilbur’s depiction of Beowulf however, contained far less stories of heroic actions, and far more derogatory terms rebuking the people for their actions and mindset. Apparently Wilbur has no love for the Anglo-Saxon people. However, one cannot say the same for Beowulf. As Wilbur repeatedly mocks the Anglo-saxons, he creates a contrast between what he thinks of them in light of Beowulf’s heroic nature. For example, Wilbur’s first descriptions of these people contained the phrase, “It was a childish country” (Wilbur 13). With this, Wilbur sets up Beowulf in an almost parental position above these people. Beowulf…
Beowulf is beyond human having super strength, and incredible intelligence. Beowulf is called upon from Geatland to fight a monstrous beast named Grendel. During the battle with Grendel, Beowulf grabs Grendel’s arm with such strength the monster himself couldn’t move. Grendel writhed with fear, for he has never met any being stronger than he. Beowulf did not hesitate and ripped off Grendel’s arm hanging it on rafters celebrating the defeat of the sin-stained demon. Beowulf is also a sagacious warrior bringing his chain mail armor to confront Grendel’s mother who seeks revenge. Fighting in the depths of a lake where Beowulf is cornered glances at the wall to find a sword made by giants. Swung with such strength that Beowulf beheads Grendel’s mother in one fell swoop.…
As I read the scriptures one evening I came across a passage in 2 Timothy 2 in my devotions that evening and upon reading verses 23-24 I was cut deep to the heart. “Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil,” I was instantly reminded of an argument I had earlier in the day with a professor. It was not just about that argument it was more about my attitude with this professor at all times. I had prided myself on being argumentative with him all year even laughing with classmates about arguments I would instigate just for fun. I loved God so deeply and had such an honest fear of God that I knew this needed to change. I went to school differently the next day. I apologized to my professor and did not enter arguments with this professor but submitted to him as I submitted to God.…

Beowulf is one of the oldest English Literatures in our time today. At the time of which England is being changed from Pagan to Christian. When people believed they had to fight for a place on earth against monsters. The writer of Beowulf took the character’s flaws and related them to actual life experiences. A critic says. “The poet, however, consciously used them to characterize human experience, stressing recurring ng patterns, and to represent the characters' attempts to understand their situation” (Constantakis). This helps to better understand the reading of Beowulf and to understand the poets’ ideas. Believing and living life based on fate. Throughout this poem a variety of literary devices are used to express the characters in the…
