Theologian Research Paper John Calvin was born in France on 1509, died in Switzerland on 1564. He significantly influenced Protestantism and along with Martin Luther, he is regarded as the most influential early theologian. LIFE Calvin was born as the first son of Gérard Cauvin who was an official at Vicardi region (Northern France). Cauvin was on of the elite intellectual back then and devoted himself for Calvin’s education. Calvin was sent to College de Marche in Paris at the age of 14. At Paris, Calvin prepared for his university studying total 7 subjects. He was transferred to College Montaigu at the end of 1523, the place where Calvin became friends with reform-minded friends. His most famous work is the Institutes of the Christian Religion. In the book, Calvin expresses his view on Christian theology in concise and comprehensible way. The first edition of the book significantly influenced French styles and ideas. The last edition of the book, published in Geneva in 1559, was at least 4 times longer than the first edition. Final edition showed Calvin’s concerns among Creator, Redeemer, Spirit and church with the main theme of God’s sovereignty and grace. Calvin believed that every believers have vocational calling to serve God. Calvin taught people how to better understand the biblical doctrine of work and shared his ideas. One of the most famous idea of Calvin is the five Solas. The five Solas include, Sola Scriptura, Solus Christus, Sola Fide, Sola Gratia, and Soli Deo Gloria. All of them each mean, by scripture alone, by faith alone, by grace alone, Chirst alone, and glory to God alone. The idea of predestination, idea that everything is chosen, was also spread by Calvin. Since his ideas contradicted with Roman Catholic Church, it caused lot of controversy. There were lot of people who disagreed with Calvin’s ideas. People such as Pierre Caroli, Bolsec, Joachim Westphal all disagreed with him and accused him. He had to escape from Paris and get banished fro Geneva because of his belief contradicting the Roman Catholic. There was even a public disputation against Calvin’s doctrine of predestination.
