Owens was the youngest of 10 kids, 3 ladies and 7 boys, born to Henry Cleveland Owens (a sharecropper) and mother Emma Fitzgerald in Oakville, Alabama, on Sep twelve, 1913. J.C.,. once his new teacher asked his name (to enter in her roll book), he said "J.C.", however due to his sturdy Southern accent, she thought he same "Jesse". The name stuck, and he was referred to as jock for the remainder of his life. As a boy, Owens took totally different jobs in his spare time: he delivered groceries, loaded freight cars and worked in a very shoe shop whereas his father and older brother worked at a steel plant.Throughout this era, Owens accomplished that he had a passion for running.
