Any major change on the nursing care environment, such as adoption of a nursing model of care, requires ongoing support and reinforcement in order to maintain the benefits of such change. Early in my career, our firm was faced with a challenge about the way we were operating our department due to new Medicare Therapy Cap regulations (the trigger event). The initial plan failed as I did not implement the proper sequence of tools and tasks that is associated with the change implementation model, which has 4 steps that should flow seamlessly in the following order: redesign, help, people change, and system and structure (Spector, 2013, p. 41). Even when these changes are considered to be beneficial to advance practice nursing, we are aware that changes are in some instances painful, overwhelming and in certain sense chaotic, and any change holds components of loss (Spross, & Hanson 2009). In order to become an effective advanced practice nurse, there are a series of attributes that need to be incorporated their practice because today nurse leaders do not have the luxury of leading only in the nursing circles.
