The book, Lakota Woman, written by Mary Crow Dog, gave the reader a personal view of the feelings shared by most Indians living in the United States during this present day. The book dealt with the time period of Crow Dog’s life along with some references to past events. Crow Dog attempted to explain the hostility felt towards the white men in the United States by the surviving Indian population. She used her own life as an example in many instances to give the reader a personal perspective. The main point in writing this book was to present the reader with the Indian viewpoint on how they were treated and what the effects of that treatment has done to their people over the years.…
“It should also be emphasize that equality of treatment with regard to the right to marry implies that polygamy is incompatible with this principle. Polygamy violates the dignity of women. It is an inadmissible discrimination against women. Consequently,…
Once married it all would become her husbands and he was free to do with it what he pleased. When a couple had children if divorce took place the children stayed with the father. A married woman had no rights and was not acknowledged by the courts. “A woman was a legal incompetent, as children, idiots, and criminals were under English law.” (14) The oppression and inequality experienced by these women was their primary reason to want to stay with their Native American…
The author who wrote the article is the son of the woman who started the Association of American Indian Affairs (AAIA). They emphasized that his mother was a white female, a white woman leading the AAIA. The AAIA was a white-based organization that developed around the same time the Congress for American Indians was formed by the First Nations of America. I am not sure whom the author is speaking about but they say the AAIA want Indian tribes to place mechanisms to prohibit discrimination, guarantee civil right, protect, religious freedom, and require free elections. This is the problem with the Europeans who came to this land and took over. They come to a land where they never been before and start making the rules, as if they owned the land.…
Just how disrespectful and degrading could that had been, having your traditions, religion, and the clothes you wear, that’s traditional to you, taken away. I think this was harsh of the white men to do this to the natives Indians. When other cultures don't resemble the white man, it should be impossible allow them to have authority to change others values because they don’t resemble them. The white men also took away the Native American given name and forced them to change their names, but despite all that, it still didn’t affect who they truly are.…
“During the first half of the nineteenth century, the Cherokee legislature enacted a series of laws regulating sex and marriage that reveal the efforts of Cherokee authorities to modify conceptions of gender and race in the Nation.” –Fay Yarbrough, Legislating Women’s Sexuality: Cherokee Marriage Laws in the 19th Century, 385 Yarbrough’s statement illustrates how Cherokee officials were redefining Cherokees racially and sought to control the marital behavior of Cherokee women because they had the ability to create legitimate members of the Cherokee Nation through marriage and childbirth. It reveals how the Cherokee Nation was resisting American’s attempt to control them and dispossess them of their land, yet at the same time, they were slowly adapting American ideologies regarding race, gender and status.…
First and foremost, the Iroquois use allusions to Native American tradition gender roles in order to teach the younger generation how to be proper Iroquois husband and wives. For instance, the Iroquois warns that if young girls have curiosity or nag their husbands, they will get summarily pushed out of their protective society just so quickly as the “husband fed up with all [the demands] [his wife] has made on him, pushed her.” These allusions create substantial fear in the younger generation, enough to educate and change behavior.…
When the colonies were expanding to the west, Native Americans seemed to either move further west or dissolve in the white society that was surrounding them. Discussed in class and said by Dr. Amundson, “Indigenous people saw freedom in retaining their traditions and civilizations.” As long as Native Americans were able to withhold their traditions, they were okay. However, some colonists pushed them to the point of which that wasn’t possible, which resulted in a war between some indigenous groups and colonists. As Ronald Takaki said in A Different Mirror, “Indians seemed to lack everything the English identified as civilized - Christianity, cities, letters, and clothing. Unlike the English, Indians were allegedly driven by their passions, especially their sexuality” (33). Colonists and Native Americans were very different groups of people that led very different lifestyles, but during the Lewis and Clark expedition, they came across Indians that would help them through their…
Social monogamy is an image most often portrayed by many of the human species. Originally spread by the Greeks and Romans, the tradition was maintained mostly through Christianity, one of the biggest champions of monogamy within history. As wide spread as monogamy is, it may have driven society into darker corners of human nature than was originally expected. With the rise of monogamy came such things as the rise of the objectification of both human males and females through marriage. This is mostly shown by just how marital laws were imposed and how the customs related to…

If I were an Native American and I was faced with the disadvantages and unfairness they were treated with, I would be furious. I don't find it right that the white man can barge in,take all that rightfully belongs to them and end years of tradition and rituals to make them over into their idea of a “christian”. Reasons as to why I feel the way I do about the situation shall be displayed in the following paragraph.…

How did geography affect Greek history? In what ways was Greek civilization molded by the land, the sea, and the weather of the Mediterranean area?…
A long time before this land was called the United States, the Cherokee people used to live in this land in the valleys of rivers that drained the southern Appalachians. These people made their homes, farmed their land, and buried their dead. Also these people, who are now called Indians claimed larger lands. They would use these for hunting deer and gathering material, to live off of. Later these lands were called Virginia and Kentucky. As it is mentioned in the text, these people had their own culture and own way of life. They had their own gender roles and religion; even eating food had a different definition than the white man’s culture. They had equality between genders, and other members of the tribe had equal rights to talk. But still white people called them “savage” or uncivilized for political reasons and not just because they were completely barbaric.…
To begin with we will provide a brief background on the case. The fact is , John was travelling on the journey to Liverpool by using the ticket that his girlfriend had bought him. When he was boarding the ferry he was approached by a member of the ferry staff who informed him that he was the 100,000th passenger to travel on the new service. He was also informed that if he would engage in a number of publicity events associated with the fact that he was the 100,000th passenger that he would receive in turn unlimited travel on the ferry for the rest of his life. John agreed with that proposal and was involved in a number of television and radio appearances and his name and pictures was used by the company. Subsequently, John heard nothing from the Superfast Ltd. Last week, he decided to travel to a football game in Liverpool and he contacted Superfast Ltd to arrange his free travel. The company informed him that the ‘free travel for life’was simply a prize that had been made available to him and as he had provided nothing to the company in return so there would be no free travel made available to him.…
