John Proctor Versus Society John Proctor attempts to defeat society alone. In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, John Proctor struggling to gain power shows that one person cannot change society. John Proctor struggles to get people to believe that the kids are lying. John struggles with trying to keep his good name too. Also when Elizabeth got sent to jail and sentenced to be hanged, John had to fight to get Elizabeth out before death occurred. First, John Proctor struggles to gain power to change what society thinks about the witchcraft Abigail started. Abigail’s lies made Proctor struggle in getting society to believe the truth. As John said, “You are pulling Heaven down and raising a whore!”(III.ii) Proctor is saying that society believing everything Abigail is saying is only making a more powerful woman and liar which makes all the good in the world disappear more and more with every lie Abigail tells and society believes.. Everytime Proctor tried to tell the townspeople and judges the truth about witchcraft, Abigail found a way to make what Proctor said sound like a lie. John got tired of the town not believing in what is said so John confesses to a lie and gets sent to jail.

Abigail's lies have gone too far now and those lies are forcing John to confess to things that are not true which is taking away the good name John has. John doesn’t want to lose that good name but has to do whatever possible to get society to believe what is really going on and maybe get the truth out of the lies.
