According to Sire on page 20 "a world view is a commitment, a fundamental orientation of the heart, that can be expressed as a story or in a set of presuppositions that we hold about the basic constitution of reality, and provides …show more content…
the foundation on which we live and move and have our being."
Evaluating the different worldviews would be impossible if there were not a consistent and set standard. Sir developed eight questions that would help determine the validity of the worldviews. The questions are found in our text on page 22, what is prim reality, what is the nature of external reality, what is a human being, what happens to a person after death, why is it possible to know anything at all, how do we know right from wrong, what is the meaning of human history and what personal life orienting core commitments are consistent with this world view. These questions will gives us what we might need to substantiate our worldview. It could also help understand who we are as well as the world around us.
The first worldview which Sire himself has adopted is Christian Theism. I am glad that the author is forthright in declaring what his world view is. This allows the reader to understand the bases of his thought without having to guess at his worldview. Christian Theism is a discussion on the basics of Christianity. It answers questions on. "How we know god?" and "what role does human freedom play in a universe where God is sovereign?"Page 25-26. This is a very good read that express the greatness of the one and only God that I serve. Sire clearly describes God as being infinite, personal, transcendent, omniscient, sovereign, and good. Sire goes on with answering the questions he has set forth to evaluate telling about the worldview that God created the world, he created it with order and how he is constantly involved. Sire also talks about how we are made in the image of a God and how God has not left us alone but has made a way for us to have a relationship with him through communication. God revels himself to us through general and special revelations. We were all created good but because of the fall we live under curse of Adams and Eve's disobedience. However, God had a plan for redemption through what Jesus did on the cross. It is wonderful to know that we have the opportunity to have a relationship with God through his son Jesus Christ. Questions are answered about life after death in how we will live eternally somewhere, in heaven that he has prepared for us or in the hell that was created for the devil and his angels. Theism teaches us about the goodness, holiness of God, and his love toward humanity. It also declares that God is "the standard by which all moral judgments are measured" page 42. It speaks of Gods purpose for humanity how God desires to bless us and meet our needs. I am delighted that Sire did not leave out the area of commitment. So many today will talk about how God is committed to us but fail to tell about the fact that we have a responsibility to Him.
Deism is the view that God exist but is impersonal and that God expresses himself through what exists. This worldview however, God has no personality, or relationship to us he is just a force or energy. "One college student wrote when asked what was God like, he drew a big smiley face and said he is one big smiley face that has big hands, big hands," page 64. Sire also describes the fact the worldview of Deism has no foundation for what is right and wrong. This view believes that whatever is is right a position that destroys ethics.
Naturalism, is discussed in the next chapter and it has the view that there is no God, what you see is what you get. With each view we can see how that God is being reduced and now in this world view he has become nonexistent. Which gives us nothing but what we have to rely on. "There is no God, no spirit, and no life beyond the grave" page 92. Our determination of what is right and wrong all comes from humanity. What does it matter what is right and what is wrong according to this view we die and that is the end of it. This view gives no hope or meaning for humanity.
Nihilism carries with it the view that nothing matters, "it is really a denial of all worldviews" page 93. Sire goes on to give 5 reasons why that Nihilism is unlivable number one is "From meaninglessness nothing at all follows, or anything follows, number two, every time nihilist think and trust their thinking, they are inconsistent, for they have denied that thinking is of value or that it can lead to knowledge," page113, number three, "while a limited sort of practical nihilism is possible for a while eventually a limit is reached, number four nihilism is a death of art," page115, and number five, "people cannot live with it because it denies what every fiber of their waking being calls for, meaning, value significance, dignity, worth." What a terrible and depressing way to live.
Atheistic Existentialism has the basic believes of naturalism "except those that relate to human nature and our relationship to the cosmos" page118. This view tries to give meaning to the person or self. This worldview is different in the idea of two different forms of reality. The objective form is a type of reality that deals with the cosmos and that it just exists. The subjective form deals with the "mind of consciousness, of awareness of freedom, of stability." In the naturalism worldview the forms of reality agree and in Atheistic Existentialism they disagree. This worldview is focused on giving meaning to the individual. It tries to give meaning by making the human responsible for who they are, determining their own density by free will. So in this quest to find meaning the existentialist is "committed to himself or herself" page 126. So what matter is self however the question would be what matters if you die. After death there is once again no meaning.
Eastern Pantheistic Monism, has the view of "God as the one infinite, impersonal, infinite, ultimate reality." That is God is the cosmos, God is all that exist," page 149 and we are Gods and we must come into unity with the Gods around us and this is what gives us reality. This gives the view that that many if not all paths lead to one. The religions that are associated with this world view are Hinduism and Buddhism. It seems that this worldview would be unstable because of the lack consistency it is really an odd belief system concerning reality.
The New Age worldview actually is a combination of many different worldviews which also places value on the individual. It also has a view entwined with the pagan religions which gives it the more mystical flare. The New Age makes promises of new life and a new age which provides a hope or purpose. However, their view does not allow for a transcendent God, therefore the line between good and evil disappear. They are ready to listen to any voice that may give them insight or give them an experience, science, sorcery, witchcraft, philosophy, or drug all are reality. It is all accepted as a higher state of consciousness. There is really no reason for anyone to accept this view of new age mysticism.
Postmodernism is the view that there is no one truth all stories are valid. The stories that we have is what give the Christians character the naturalist the pantheist, therefore, "human beings make themselves who they are by the language they construct about themselves"page226. Whoever than has the power of a language that can be accepted by the community is what is good. The only way to remain free then is to except the language of the community. "Postmodernism in short is committed to an endless stream of shifting" "whatever's" page229.
Islamic Theism has a world view much like that of Christian Theism when looking at the questions that are asked to give the view consistency and validity. However, at the same time they are very much different. Allah is kind and merciful however administers extreme punishment to those who refuse to repent of sins against the Koran. Islamic law is the only valid law of the world. This is very alarming knowing that Holy war is the very essences of the Islamic teaching. Mohammed taught his followers to kill any on that did not bow to him and his religion. Sire explains that the "Christians and Jews must either be converted or at least pay tax and acknowledge Mohammed's teachings and they will be tolerated for that is the least they can do to enjoy the benefits of the Muslim community" page 270. Sire goes on to state that" to the best of His knowledge that Muslims in the United States are about 7 million strong" Page 277.
The Universe next door next Door is a very insightful description of the many worldviews. However, as many as there may be there is only a limited number of answers to the 8 questions that has been developed by Sire. The questions give great strength and insight to each worldview and its consistency as well as relativity. It is very important that we understand what our worldview is and be secure in our faith. I believe that was the intention of Sire in writing the book. The strength then of this book would be that it reaffirms the foundation on which one may stand, helps to determine what their world view is and it helps us to be able to recognize the worldview of others. This book has already been very useful as it is a part of many college courses, and has been translated into 19 languages. It will be useful to me personally as continue in ministry and learn more about the people around me. The only weakness that could be a problem is at first it seemed a little difficult to read, but once into the book you find that it flows together and brings understanding.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and I would recommend it to any one that that dint understand worldview , those interested in the ministry as well as those who are just beginning their walk with Christ.
Sire does not hide his faith but believes that Christian Theism is the only promising world view to choose. My God is personal and He is with me all the time. He is my ever present help in the time of trouble. He is committed to me and to keeps that which I have committed unto him. The Universe next door is written from a Christian prospective that give us understanding of the different worldviews. Sire stated in his book on page 12 that "we should not only be able to detect the world view of others but be aware of our own" This is I believe the primary purpose of this book. The important purpose is for us to have justification of what we believe as well as an understanding of the worldview of others.
According to Sire on page 20 "a world view is a commitment, a fundamental orientation of the heart, that can be expressed as a story or in a set of presuppositions that we hold about the basic constitution of reality, and provides the foundation on which we live and move and have our

According to Sire on page 20 "a world view is a commitment, a fundamental orientation of the heart, that can be expressed as a story or in a set of presuppositions that we hold about the basic constitution of reality, and provides the foundation on which we live and move and have our being."
Sire goes on to give 5 reasons why that Nihilism is unlivable number one is "From meaninglessness nothing at all follows, or anything follows, number two, every time nihilist think and trust their thinking, they are inconsistent, for they have denied that thinking is of value or that it can lead to knowledge," page113, number three, "while a limited sort of practical nihilism is possible for a while eventually a limit is reached, number four nihilism is a death of art," page115, and number five, "people cannot live with it because it denies what every fiber of their waking being calls for, meaning, value significance, dignity, worth." This book has already been very useful as it is a part of many college courses, and has been translated into 19 languages.
According to Sire on page 20 "a world view is a commitment, a fundamental orientation of the heart, that can be expressed as a story or in a set of presuppositions that we hold about the basic constitution of reality, and provides the foundation on which we live and move and have our being."
According to Sire on page 20 "a world view is a commitment, a fundamental orientation of the heart, that can be expressed as a story or in a set of presuppositions that we hold about the basic constitution of reality, and provides the foundation on which we live and move and have our being."

According to Sire on page 20 "a world view is a commitment, a fundamental orientation of the heart, that can be expressed as a story or in a set of presuppositions that we hold about the basic constitution of reality, and provides the foundation on which we live and move and have our being."
According to Sire on page 20 "a world view is a commitment, a fundamental orientation of the heart, that can be expressed as a story or in a set of presuppositions that we hold about the basic constitution of reality, and provides the foundation on which we live and move and have our being."
