John Steinbeck is a well-known American author that was born in Salinas, California in 1902. His writings in still appeal to all ages today, and continue to influence many. Throughout his life wrote, he stories and novels and even helped produce films. At the young age of fourteen, John Steinbeck decided he wanted to be a writer. His mother supported him in his love to read and write but did not encourage him to make a profession out of it. He began writing short stories and such as a teenager. John graduated from Salinas High School in 1919 and went on to further pursue his education at the University of Stanford. There he was enrolled in creative writing classes. Without a degree, John decided to drop out of college. The next few years, he decided to support himself with manual labor while focusing on writing ("American Writers: John Steinbeck."). He first moved to New york city in search of a publisher, but finding no luck, he moved back to California. Steinbeck's first published novel was Cup of Gold in 1929. After that came The Pastures of Heaven and, in 1933, To a God Unknown. These first three novels did not succeed. Steinbeck first succeeded with his novel Tortilla Flat, published in 1935. The books In Dubious Battle and Of Mice and Men followed soon after.
The Grapes of Wrath, published in 1939, became known as one of Steinbeck's most famous books. Many more novels and stories came from Steinbeck and the influences he had around him ("John Steinbeck.")
