In the book Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck he uses imagery throughout the book. Such as during chapter 11, when he describes all the empty land and houses. The reader sees the houses spread across the land and witnesses the shingles being torn off and the dust invading every crevice. The read feels a sort of sadness for the emptiness of it all. On pages 149-150 the imagery allows the reader to view how the house slowly deteriorates.…
Images that are used to create feeling. They help us experience the words with our five senses. Touching, smelling, hearing, tasting, and seeing are used in The Most Dangerous Game to create imagery. This sentence is a perfect example of astounding imagery “It’s so dark,” he thought, “that i could sleep without closing my eyes; the night would be my eyelids--.” The setting of the story is immediately given. When you read this sentence, you can imagine how dark it is by actually closing your eyes like Rainsford and experience how dark the night sky really was. Another example of imagery is, “The hunter shook his head several times, as if he were puzzled. Then he straightened up and took from his case one of his black cigarettes; its pungent incense like smoke floated up to Rainsford’s nostrils.” You can smell the incense like it was right in front of you. You can imagine the smoke rising in the air as Rainsford breathed it in. You can also sense the nervousness and suspense, and suspense is a reader’s favorite…
An example of imagery is “It was like coming into the cold marbled room of a mausoleum after the moon has set. (Bradbury 10)” Bradbury uses this statement to show us as the reader that he wants us to feel or create an image of Montag walking into a room that pretty much lifeless and dark. The author uses this feeling and imagery because in the novel the characters portray humans that can not think for themselves so therefore it seems…
In Night by Elie Wiesel a memoir about his time in the Holocaust concentration camps Elie used animal imagery. Animal imagery is when someone uses animal instincts and behavior to define the characteristics of a human. Using animal imagery, he accomplished multiple things. One of them is showing how the prisoners act and how this experience has changed them and made them animal-like. Most people know how animals act. An by using animal imagery the author gives the reader a greater understanding of the situation. There is evidence backed by many examples in Elie’s writing.…
Imagery is used in multiple points around the text and is possibly the most important poetic element. For instance in the text the speaker uses imagery such as “the boys stamp, the girls shriek, and the drum booms…” by adding this imagery the author is showing how caught up in the action everyone is. This quote reveals the atmosphere…
The author uses imagery in this scene to show the relationships between the…
Steinbeck begins his novel by establishing vivid imagery to draw the reader in and get them interested in the story. From the very first page of the novel, Steinbeck’s description of the rain and sky sets the stage for vivid imagery throughout the book:…
Loneliness can hurt a person. It makes them feel like they are an animal all alone in an empty forest. Just getting by. In John Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men he uses animal imagery to portray the personality and actions of his characters showing the loneliness of the characters.…

John Steinbeck uses an abundance of symbolism in Of Mice and Men to convey his central idea of humans being extremely diverse and…
Steinbeck uses much animal imagery in his writing, particularly in his description of Lennie. Even from the very beginning where he describes Lennie "walk[ing] heavily, dragging his feet a little, the way a bear drags his paws," p4 we see this comparison. Each of the animals mentioned in the novel are used as a metaphor to Lennie's personality and behaviour. Dragging his "paws" like a "bear" depicts an image of a slow, overly large man, harmlessly prodding along. Steinbeck cleverly chooses these links. As mentioned earlier, Lennie's relationship with the mice also play a major part in the story. His obsession with petting them provides him with security and comfort. Just the feeling of the mouse's smooth fur, running along his fingers, leaves him with a sense of contentment. This symbolises his soft, caring attitude and his warm heart. Rabbits are also another animal mentioned in the novel. George tells Lennie " if you do [get in trouble], I won't let you tend to the rabbits." p17 This become's Lennie's motivation to behave' and watch what he does. Sometimes, quite often than not, Lennie finds himself, unintentionally in strife. Yet when he has something to hope for, (in this case rabbits, which he imagines himself stroking and looking after) he tries harder to be good'. The forth example of Steinbeck's use of animal imagery in the text is his comparison of Lennie's loyalty to that of a dog. Though not directly, this is the image conjured from his description of Lennie drinking from a pool of water, very early on. "His huge companion dropped his blankets and flung himself down and drank from the surface of the green pool." p4 It seems here, that Lennie is, as the phrase goes a man's best friend'. He proves, just as much as George does to him, his complete loyalty and unconditional friendship. In ways it is easier to compare Lennie's traits to that of a dog. Like a dog, he doesn't understand certain concepts, doesn't think about the consequences to his…
A comparison of these two passages yields the concept that nature possesses a conflict between the ideal and the reality. One way Steinbeck expresses this theme is through his use of imagery. For example, he illustrates this imagery in the way he describes the actions of the woodland environment and how it changes from the beginning to end. Another way Steinbeck shows this idea is through the use of detail in his writing. An example of this would be how he describes the environment and animals in specific detail that provides an idea of what is going to happen next. Lastly Steinbeck’s use of organization in Of Mice and Men helps to show this reoccurring theme. He does this through the way he explains one idea fully and then transitions smoothly to the next. This visualized theme is that nature can be ideal and beautiful but survival sometimes requires harsh reality.…
In the novel “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding the author uses literature to support the belief that man is wild and will always be wild. Golding supports that statement made by Arthur Schopenhauer; Schopenhauer claimed that “Man is at bottom a wild and terrible animal”. Man through the ages has evolved in intellect that has furthered technology, medicine, understanding and more but one thing that we haven’t moved past is our instincts the instinct to survive at all means necessary. Humankind has got up to where it is now by “war” without war we wouldn’t have had the Neolithic era and ergo our present day.…
Symbolism embodies an abstract idea or concept by using an object or character. In the parable, The Pearl, Steinbeck uses symbolism extensively to create and develop the novel's themes. The pearl of the book's title is a symbol, which develops from a paradise of hopes and dreams, to a destructive centre of evil. The key symbol of the pearl generates the theme of the destructive nature of greed throughout the book. The doctor as a symbol develops the theme of oppression. Steinbeck elaborates the theme of humanity in the natural world by changing the way he describes nature.…
