For one, John Steinbeck uses foreshadowing by giving us huge hints about the farm dream dying. In chapter 4 on page 74 Crooks is talking to Lennie. While he is talking to Lennie, Lennie says the farm idea and talks about it. Crooks ends up saying “You’re nuts”. Men have went to that ranch to work and Crooks says that none of them had accomplished that dream and they all end up leaving. At that point it was kind of obvious that it wasn’t going to work out. Also Lennie has always costed them their jobs. George says “Lennie if you jus’ happen to get in trouble like you always done before”. Lennie has always gotten in trouble before and costed them their job in weed and if he does it again then they won’t be able to get them the money they need. Lennie loves to pet really soft things. In Doc B Lennie say “ I like to pet soft things”. This is a huge hint because Lennie loves soft things and whenever lennie gets ahold of something soft he won’t let go and he grabs tighter if they try to get away just like what he did in weed.
