Steinbeck developed his concerns in form of a novel-play by developing a series of events that reveals fatal tragedy such as death of two characters. These tragedies are directly and indirectly linked to effects of the Great depression.

Many people who existed by then faced its wrath that made their lives feel like hell. Following these adverse effects brought by The Great Depression, many authors come out initiatives in expressing their grievances through articles. Steinbeck is one of these authors that took part in expressing their concerns through writing the novel ‘Of Mice and Men’. He wrote this novel in the form of a novel-play writing developed way back in early 1930s. This implies that this novel is structured in such a way that it comprises of stylistic features of a novel and play script integrated in one context. The primary aim as to why Steinbeck developed his context in such away was to develop writing that could be played or to design a play that could be read just like a novel (Parra 50). This novel-play comprises of three acts where each act is incorporated in two chapters. Critics reveal that Steinbeck got inspired to title this novel by the name ‘of Mice and Men’ after admiring a literary piece composed by Robert Burn entitled ‘To a Mouse’. Burn composed this poem as a result of feeling of regrets upon demolishing a mouse habitat when working on his field (Nelson 182). These two literal works have one common feature in the sense that both artists reveal feelings of regret following an already committed tragedy.
