Something that you have to keep in mind when you search for literature on the Internet is that there is always some form of bias. The author of a review or critical essay could have loved or hated the story or the writer. This bias could cause the reviewer to leave out certain information or augment portions of the text to serve their purpose.
Another thing that a researcher must keep in mind while searching is the publication date of the essays. If the date is not recent, within the past five to ten years, then the paper may be outdated and no longer contain relevant information.
All of the results that I found were relevant to the Updike story. However, the results were not all on the same topic. For example, there is an essay by Greg W. Bentley entitled "Sammy's Erotic Experience: Subjectivity and Sexual Difference in John Updike's 'A & P'." This work is vastly different from another result entitled " John Updike's 'A & …show more content…
After searching "John Updike A&P" I found that I had almost five hundred results but most of them were generalized and not necessarily critiques that a writer would use for an analytical paper. I refined my search my changing it to "John Updike A&P review" and the results were much lower and incredibly more relevant. I also made sure to remove the citations and patent options in the advanced search of Google Scholar to find actual articles. Before I found results that were useful, it took about four or five tries of editing and refining my search
