John Wilkes Booth's Assassination
Choosing my topic for National History Day was based on the long debated conspiracy of the reason behind the assassination of the President Lincoln. The majority of the history books written on this event condemned John Wilkes Booth as a national assassin, President killer, but rarely did they expand on why Booth pulled the trigger. I have gone in depth with my research to discover the answer and have produced a conclusion of Booth’s motives which was based on what in that era was called “the higher law”. The higher law in layman’s terms is based off moral and sometimes religious principle rather than follow the human law. It was believed that John Wilkes Booth’s motives might have been inspired by a man of the name John Brown.

The book "Killing Lincoln: The Shocking Assassination that Changed America Forever" by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard was written to share the story of Abraham Lincoln’s death. This great book was written from a third person point of view, and many bits and pieces were taking from Lincoln’s journals. The whole book approaches the Civil War right off the bat and creates a hostile background because of the war and the plan to kill Lincoln. I would suggest that before you read this book you prepare yourself for many important people that come and go throughout the story. It may be kind of hard to understand the book if you do not keep track of all of the characters, and write them down.…

William Steward was only injured while Johnson wasn’t even confronted. The plan to kidnap him in Ford’s Theater, I knew, wasn’t going to work because I had to ask myself one question: how am I going to kidnap the President of the United States in front of hundreds of people, especially when there was a Union major sitting right next to him? Lincoln was against everything I stood for. He was my enemy, and I could think of only one other option: kill!” he yelled.…

One of the world’s most devastating and history-changing wars was caused by the assassination of Austria-Hungary’s Archduke Franz Ferdinand. He was next in line for the throne to govern over the Austria-Hungary empire in the beginning of the 20th century, and he was rising at a very dangerous and tense time. In the early 1900s, Austria-Hungary was in a stressful conflict with the country of Serbia. The Serbians wanted the land of Bosnia, in which the Austria-Hungarian empire had annexed into their country, and Serbia wanted to unite all of the Serb ethnic groups to form a country known as “Greater Serbia,” (Bodden 19). They wanted to send a message to Austria-Hungary, and they wanted to show that they meant business. So, the Serbian government…

One of the most disputatious case in the history of America is the assassination of Mr. John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the Commander in Chief of the United States of America. In the Case of Lee Harvey Oswald, I will prove that Mr. Oswald is innocent without a shadow of a doubt, due to the conspicuous yet controversial facts and evidences that substantially stands out. Who in the right mind would think that Mr. Oswald is guilty, when he is just a regular citizen whose life seemed like a collection of clichés from a movie, even though he was a latchkey child, he was able to be independent and stand on his own .…

Many could not believe that the news of Lincoln’s assassination were real and thought it only as rumours. Others thought that “the whole story may be a Yankee lie.” In Towne’s diary, it is mentioned that, “the black minister of Frogmore said that if they knew the President were dead they would mourn for him, but they could not think that was the truth, and they would wait and see.”…

The last Confederate forces surrendered on 26 April. Lincoln became a hate figure by many Southerners who despised his as the "Negro friend". The actor, John Wilkes Booth, 26 years old, successful and popular in Washington was so fanatical that he wanted to kidnap Lincoln. With Lincoln as his hostage, the north should be forced to cease. Because of the surrender of the South, the only revenge left for Booth was to execute the president. President Abraham Lincoln was shot on April 14, by John Wilkes Booth, a radical Southerner, and died the next day. He crept into the presidential box (the guard was in the pub next door) and shot Lincoln with a small Derringer pistol in the back of the head. In Manhunt, by James L. Swanson, John Wilkes Booth assassinates Abraham Lincoln because he has very strong beliefs that African Americans should have rights. In the success of Lincoln’s attempt to preserve the Union and free the slaves, Booth took matters into his own hands by killing Lincoln. Although this was a very extreme way to deal with things, I can connect Booth’s passion to myself. His cause was not good, but he set out to do what is right in his eyes and did it. I can connect his motivation in doing things to myself. My passion is to live my life as environmentally friendly as I possibly can. Some things I do are take caps off water bottles, and bring them to centers where they collect them. I always try to get my mom to only buy products that were made from recycled materials…

In 1976, the US Senate ordered a fresh inquiry into the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, who was murdered in 1963 during a motorcade in Dallas, Texas while campaigning for re-election. People who had been involved in the original Warren Commission investigations were asked to make fresh statements. The FBI and the CIA were persuaded to release more of their documents on Oswald. New lines of inquiry were opened and individuals who had not previously given evidence were persuaded to come forward. Most important of all, pieces of evidence such as photos and sound recordings were subjected to scientific analysis using the most up-to-date methods and equipment. The House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) completed their investigation in 1979 and they finally came to a discrete verdict that Lee Harvey Oswald fired three shots at Kennedy, one of which killed the president. A fourth shot was fired from the grassy knoll, which was contradictory to the statement printed by the Warren Commission 16 years earlier. They concluded that John Kennedy was assassinated as the result of a conspiracy.…
