John Towner Williams was born on February 8th, 1932, in Flushing(Queens), New York. John attended North Hollywood High School in Los Angeles and graduated in 1950. After High School, he attended college at UCLA. There he studied with Italian composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. In 1952, John Williams was drafted into the Air Force where he composed music and conducted the Air Force band. In 1955, John’s Air Force service ended and he moved to New York City to study at the school of Julliard. After finishing all of his education, he moved back to Los Angeles and worked as an orchestrator at film studios. John Williams is an extremely talented composer, conductor, and pianist. He has composed music for many movies that have become some of the most recognizable pieces of music. These movies include The Star Wars Series, Indiana Jones, the first three Harry Potter movies, Jaws, Home Alone, Superman, Hook, and E.T. He has also written well known pieces for things other than movies. These include the music for four different Olympic Games, NBC Nightly News, and DreamWorks Production Logo. Most of John Williams’ music is very well known to many people. He has also composed numerous classical concerti that may not be as well-known as the rest of his music.
John Williams’ hard work composing has definitely paid off by receiving many awards. He has been nominated for forty five Oscar Awards. He holds the record for the amount of Oscar Awards nominated to a single living person. In the history of the academy awards, he is the second most nominated, following Walt Disney. John has won five Academy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, twenty one Grammy Awards, four Oscars, three Emmy Awards, and six BAFTA’s. Williams has been placed into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame and the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame. These are only a few of John Williams’ many accomplishments.
