John Howard was born on the 26th of July 1939 in Earlwood Sydney. Howard is a fourth son of Mona and Lyall Howard who were married in 1925. His older brother Stanley was born in 1926, followed by Walter in 1929, and Robert (bob) in 1936. John’s mother was an office worker until marriage. His father and his paternal Grandfather were both veterans of the first AIF in World War 1. When john was sixteen his father died (1995). Howard suffered from hearing impairment when he was a young boy which left him with slight speech impediment because his early academic performance was limited meaning he had to rely on his memory.

As a boy, he worked in a family owned business, Dulwich Hill petrol stations. He attended Earlwood primary school in 1946-1951 followed by Canterbury boy’s high school until 1956. He then attended Sydney University and studied Law..

Howard completed a law degree in 1961 which helped him to join the young liberals when he was 18. In 1973, He won pre-selection for the House of Representatives seat of Bennalong. In 1974, He won the seat at the federal election. Howard was the leader of the opposition from 1985-1989 then he became the Prime Minister following the liberal national party.

This was put into place because, on the 28th of April 1996, just three weeks after John Howard came into office, 35 people were murdered and 23 wounded in the Port Arthur Massacre in Tasmania. The shooter, Martin Bryant , who used various firearms, was given 35 life sentences without the possibility of parole. Bryant had major intellectual disabilities. All the fire arms used in the massacre were purchased without a fire arms licence.
