Assessment Three
Practical coaching sessions
As part of your role as a sports development officer you are going to demonstrate how to plan, lead and evaluate a coaching session in a sport/skill of your choice. The Coaching session you are going to plan, lead and evaluate could be on your work placement, in lessons or for an after school club. Completing this will help the trainee coaches with their development.
Plan a sports coaching session (P4). The session needs to last at least 30 minutes. You will be coaching the rest of your group. The main things that we want to see are;
Several tasks showing clear progression of a skill / technique / tactic

All students to be involved at all times (NO LINE DRILLS), and enough activities to last 30 minutes (remember, in your coaching sessions your teachers have to plan for two hours!)

An organised structure to the session (drills, equipment check, H&S)

Three clear sections – warm up, main topic, cool down – each must show progression (you will be asked to do two of the three sections, either the warm up & main topic OR the main topic & cool down)
Deliver the coaching session, with support (P5 maximum) or deliver a sports coaching session without the support of a teacher (M4).
If we have to help you or step in to solve a problem, you can only get a PASS for the whole unit. It is very important to plan properly. You do not have to do football, you can do any sport that we can do at this school. But, you need to check the availability of facilities and equipment. THIS IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY, DO NOT RELY UPON YOUR TEACHERS. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnUk1wWYrBg&feature=BFa&list=PLF8610E09FD02F473&lf=results_main USING THE YOU TUBE CLIP FROM ABOVE, THERE ARE MANY LINKS FROM IT TO GIVE YOU IDEAS FOR YOUR COACHING SESSION

    Outline why quality coaching is important for youths involved in sport. Quality coaching is important for youths involved in sporting activities as a sporting coach can dramatically impact the way a child develops and they can also impact their enjoyment and participation of sport (Australian Sports Commission, 2003; Hedstrom & Gould, 2004). Schloder and McGuire describes being a quality youth coach as “a privilege and an honour” and is extremely meaningful and important as “it carries with it significant responsibilities and accountability” (2007, p. 9). According to the ASC (2007), a quality coach needs to have thorough knowledge and understanding of the developmental stages children go through. It is their responsibility to understand that there are great variations of growth rates in children and that there are several structural and functional…

    Delivering learning activities to a class, group or individual can often involve explaining the activity/Learning objective to them and if necessary, breaking down instructions one step at a time so that the children/young people are able to understand what they are expected to achieve. We would need to ensure they have the correct resources available for the activity, adapting the resources where required for learners with special educational needs. They may also need general help and support throughout the activity and we would be expected to provide this, whilst also checking the progress they are making throughout an activity. We would need to be aware of all the resources they would need during a planned class/activity and make sure they are available for the children/young people to use.…
