The two texts that will be analysed in this essay are an excerpt from the book, “Jonah and the Big Fish”, and a print advertisement from the Seattle Soap Company that advertises the company’s Whale Oil Soap.
The two texts serve completely different purposes; the first text, or the story, aims to entertain readers by telling a fictional tale of a man who was swallowed by a fish. The second text aims to promote a specific product, to make sales and generate profit from advertisement and marketing.
The audience of text 1 – the story – could be anyone from the general public, as stories are not limited to specific people. However, since it is a work of fiction and quite a childish story, we could identify this text as being directed mainly at children and parents with children. Additionally, since the text is a religious one, which illustrates a story from the Bible – it could also be directed at Catholics, or the believers in God.
Similarly, text 2 could also be labelled as directed towards the general public, as it is advertising a type of soap – which is a good that is commonly used by all people.
