By the end of the murders, the suspect pool had been narrowed to Robert D’Onston, and later, Joseph Barnett, who was considered a credible suspect. Joseph Barnett had lived and worked less than a mile from the heart of Whitechapel, the site of most of the murders. Barnett was not a suspect at the time of the murders, but he was later declared a suspect in the 1970’s (Barbee). They suspected him due to the fact that he was married to Mary Kelly, who late became a victim. Barnett was a fisher and Kelly did not work, but once Barnett lost his job Kelly was forced to become a prostitute to support the both of them.
