Joseph Brant was born in 1742 and his Indian name was Thayendanegea. Thayendanegea meaning he who places two bets. Joseph’s father was a sachem of the Iroquois Confederacy, which was to where the Mohawks belonged. Whereas Brant’s mother was not a Mohawk like his father. Brant did become a war chief but never rose to the rank of sachem. His parents were said to live at the Canajoharie castle in New York. Even though his family would have been a consideration and he was the grandson of one of the five chiefs who visited England in 1710, Brant was not a chief by birth. Brant did eventually become a Mohawk Indian chief and served not only as a spokesman but he also served as a Christian missionary and a British military officer during the American Revolution.1…

Joseph Plumb Martin was born in western Massachusetts in 1760. His father was a pastor who often got in trouble for speaking his mind too freely. At the age of seven, Joseph was sent to live with his affluent grandfather. When the war started in 1775 Martin chafed to enlist but he was too young. Many of Martin's friends had enlisted and Martin was quite susceptible to their peer pressure. In June of 1776, at the age of 15, Martin, though wary of a long enlistment, decided "to take a priming before I took upon me the whole coat of paint for a soldier." Thus, much to the chagrin of his grandparents, Martin enlisted in for six months as a private in the Connecticut state troops. After serving at the Battles of Brooklyn and White Plains on the side of the Patriots, the farm boy decided not to reenlist in December 1776. But a long winter at home proved too dull for the teenage veteran. He enlisted again in 1777, this time in Washington's Continental army, and served for the duration of the war, seeing action at a number of major battles. At the age of 70, the venerated veteran then living in Maine published A Narrative of Some of the Adventures, Danger and Suffering of a Revolutionary Soldier, Interspersed with Anecdotes of Incidents that Occurred Within His Own Observation. The book which did not sell particularly well fell into obscurity until rediscovered in the 1960s when it was republished with the title Private Yankee Doodle. The following excerpts detail Martin's activity at Fort Mifflin.…

Joseph Plumb Martin was born “upon the twenty-first of November, in the year of 1760” (Martin 6). His grandparents raised him on their Connecticut farm. Inspired by the Battles of Lexington and Concord he decided to enlist into the army. He was eager to help for the patriotic cause. In June of 1776, at the age of 15, Martin was able to enlist but didn’t want to sign up for a long enlistment. Soldiers at the time were enlisting for a year’s service but he did not like that and thought it was too long a time for him for the first trial, “I wished only to take a priming before I took upon me the whole coat of paint for a soldier” (Martin 16). Orders soon came allowing men to enlist for six months so Martin enrolled in the Connecticut state militia. After serving in the Battles of Brooklyn, Kip’s Bay, and White Plains in New York Martin decided not to reenlist when his stint ended. In 1777 Martin decided to reenlist after a long and dull winter at his grandparents Connecticut farm. This time he served under George Washington’s Continental Army and seen action in a number of major battles until the duration of the war.…

WP Kinsella wrote Shoeless Joe in 1982. The novel was the source for the popular movie, Field of Dreams, in 1988. Shoeless Joe is the story of Ray Kinsella, an avid baseball fan, and the journey he takes and the lengths he goes to fulfill a dream. The Journey takes Ray too many different places around the Northeast; and even places he thought his mind would never go. Ray Kinsella is your typical mid-west farmer. He and his wife Annie have a daughter and a small corn farm in the middle of Iowa. An area fit for farming, not an area fit a baseball field.…

For anyone who knows anything about baseball, the 1919 World Series brings to mind many things. "The Black Sox Scandal of 1919 started out as a few gamblers trying to get rich, and turned into one of the biggest, and easily the darkest, event in baseball history" (Everstine 4). This great sports scandal involved many, but the most memorable and most known for it was Joe Jackson. The aftermath of the great World Series Scandal left many people questioning the character of Joe Jackson and whether or not he should have relations thereafter with baseball. There is still question today whether or not to let Joe into the Hall of Fame.…

What many people do not realize is that scatology is more abundant than they think. It is in books, music, movies and almost every other medium of communication or entertainment. It has worked its way into our language, and the traditional words associated with scatology have even evolved to have new or multiple implications. Another important detail about scatology which more people need to understand is that it is not, in most cases, used for the sake of mere obscenity. Of course, there are individuals who will use it in this tasteless way, but for the most part, there is meaning behind the utilization of scatology.…

    Jacob Lawrence

One the most distinguished artists of the twentieth century, Jacob Lawrence was born in Atlantic City and spnt part of his child hood in Pennsylvania. After his parents split up in 1924, he went with his mother and siblings to New York, settling in Harlem. "He trained as a painter at the Harlem Art Workshop, inside the New York Public Library's 113 5th Street branch. Younger than the artists and writers who took part in the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s, Lawrence was also at an angle to them: he was not interested in the kind of idealized, fake-primitive images of blacks - the Noble Negroes in Art Deco guise - that tended to be produced as an antidote to the toxic racist stereotypes with which white popular culture had flooded America since Reconstruction. Nevertheless, he gained self-confidence from the Harlem cultural milieu - in particular, from the art critic Alain Locke, a Harvard-trained esthete (and America's first black Rhodes scholar) who believed strongly in the possibility of an art created by blacks, which could speak explicitly to African-Americans and still embody the values, and self-critical powers, of modernism. Or, in Locke's own words, "There is in truly great art no essential conflict between racial or national traits and universal human values." This would not sit well with today's American cultural separatists who trumpet about the incompatibility of American experiences - "It's a black thing, you wouldn't understand" - but it was vital to Lawrence's own growth as an artist. Locke perceived the importance of the Great Migration, not just as an economic event but as a cultural one, in which countless blacks took over the control of their own lives, which had been denied them in the South: When years later he told an interviewer that "I am the black community," he was neither boasting nor kidding. He had none of the alienation from Harlem that was felt by some other black artists of the 1930s, like the expatriate William Johnson.…
