When Joseph felt it right to then ask god, he does so by prayer. Not only does he pray like many people do today, without sincerity and thought, Joseph prayers with all of his heart. In the 1832 account, he said he “was filled with the spirit of god.” In 1835, he says that it “filled me with joy unspeakable.” In 1838, “he saw a pillar of light” which was beyond his comparison and description. In the 842 account, he shares that he “was enwrapped in a heavenly vision.” He was also enwrapped with a light brighter than the noon time of day. God is love and he is light, and Joseph smith was borne witness of this through the holy ghost.
