Joseph Smith Beliefs

The accounts of the first vision share unique perspectives but also include similarities that really do testify the truthfulness of Joseph Smith. Joseph was an incredible child because of his desire to search for salvation. In his first account from 1832, he describes the discontent he faced, “At about the age of twelve years my mind become seriously imprest with regard to the all importent concerns of for the well fare of my immortal Soul.” In the 1835 account, he was curious to know what is right and what is wrong. The same is expressed in 1838, when he says, “if any one of them be right which is it? And how shall I know it?” In 1842, he shares that he is determined to find the truth. There is much amazement in how much drive Joseph smith has to find the truth, and this was a crucial step in the coming of the first vision.

When Joseph felt it right to then ask god, he does so by prayer. Not only does he pray like many people do today, without sincerity and thought, Joseph prayers with all of his heart. In the 1832 account, “therefore I cried unto the Lord for mercy for there was none else to whom I could go and to obtain mercy.” In the 1835 account, he says that “I called on the Lord in mighty prayer”. He received a witness of truth through the Holy Ghost and filled with light. In the 1832 account, he said he “was filled with the spirit of god.” In 1835, he says that it “filled me with joy unspeakable.” In 1838, “he saw a pillar of light” which was beyond his comparison and description. In the 842 account, he shares that he “was enwrapped in a heavenly vision.” He was also enwrapped with a light brighter than the noon time of day. God is love and he is light, and Joseph smith was borne witness of this through the holy ghost.
