Joseph Stalin
Joseph Stalin, was known as one of the greatest Soviet leaders of the Twentieth Century. Joseph was born December 19, 1879 in Gori, Russia. Joseph came to power in Russia in 1924, a few years after Vladimir Lenin’s death. Joseph Stalin ruled over Russia until his death in 1953.
When Joseph was young he attended the church school in Gori, he was a smart child. When he was in school he did very well in religious studies, geography and Georgian. He also studied Greek and Russian. When he graduated school in 1894, he was at the top of his class. Later on he won a scholarship to study at Tbilisi, he was doing very well in his first year and got good grades. The second year he got rebellious, the school had strict religious rules and

Joseph was exiled to Switzerland. In 1912 Lenin sought out to Stalin and appointed him to serve on the first Central Committee of the Bolshevik Party. November, 1917 Bolsheviks take power in Russia. In 1922 the Soviet Union was formed, Lenin was its first leader. Through the years Stalin climbed up the ladder. After Lenin passed in 1924, Stalin officially came to power of the Soviet Union. In the first few years Stalin launched a series of five-year plans to help transform the Soviet Union to an industrial superpower. He tried to take over farms too, but many refused and those who did either got shot or exiled to Siberia. The forced collectivization led to famine and this killed millions. Stalin was a totalitarian leader, he lead under terror, manipulation, and propaganda. Anyone who stepped out of line under his rule had another thing coming. He sent out secret police to spy on civilians, he had civilians spy on civilians. Stalin was out to eliminate anyone who talked bad about him. In the second half of the 1930s Stalin instituted the “great purges” to try and eliminate what was left of the communist party. In 1941 Germans broke the Non-aggression pact they signed with Russia. Russia and Germany became enemies. After this Russia started to side with Allied powers to help take down the Germans. Some time later Hitler killed himself and the Nazi empire fell.     Like Hitler, Stalin first became active in politics when he joined a militant political party. The party Stalin joined was known as the Russian Social Democratic Party. Stalin was arrested in 1902 and was deported to Siberia but escaped and was back in Georgia two year later. Stalin first met Vladimir Lenin, leader of the Bolshevik faction of the Social Democratic Party, when he returned to Georgia. Lenin was a political mentor to Stalin and had great respect for him. In 1912, Lenin nominated Stalin to the Central Committee of the Bolshevik party. However, Stalin was arrested once again and exiled to Siberia in 1917 where he would remain until the Czar was overthrown. After the Bolshevik revolution in 1917, Lenin became the new ruler of Russia and named Stalin the Commissar of Nationalities. Over the years, however, Lenin’s health began to deteriorate. In 1924, Lenin died and the party now known as the All-Union Communist Party was headed collectively by several of Lenin’s cabinet members. Like Hitler, Stalin was a very clever manipulator and was able to turn the members against each other.
