Josephine Bourgeois Research Paper

Louise Josephine Bourgeois was a French-American artist who was born on December 25th, 1911, in Paris, France. Bourgeois lived to the age of 98 and continued creating art up until till the very end, with her last pieces being finished one/two weeks before her death on May 31st, 2010.While being notoriously well known for her large-scale sculptures and installation pieces, Bourgeois was also a painter and printmaker. Bourgeois first started her education by studying philosophy and mathematics at Sorbonne, and after her mother passed away in 1932 Bourgeois began studying art (The Art Story Contributors, 2017). Bourgeois enrolled in many different schools between the years 1934 and 1938, some of which include Ecole des Beaux-Arts, the Academie Ranson, and the Academie de la Grande-Chaumiere (The Art Story Contributors, 2017). Bourgeois would eventually move to New York in 1938 with her husband Robert Goldwater, with whom she had 3 children with. While in New York Bourgeois was able to meet a lot of artist, art dealers, and art critics. During the 40s and 50s Bourgeois had many solo show in many different New York galleries. The way that she twisted and morphed both the male and female form was so different and beautiful. By learning more about what influenced Bourgeois’s work I’ve become inspired to think of more way to start incorporating more of my emotions and memories into my work. I found a lot of the sculptures where Bourgeois used unconventional materials, like cloth and latex, more interesting than her pieces that were just made out of bronze or stainless steel. This has caused me to become more interested in trying out new materials when making future artworks.
