Journal Entry 1

This week was a little scary for me because I missed the first day of practicum. I never received an email but the director of the center was not taking any excuse. I was afraid being the only Hispanic that I have seen in the center that I would be treated a little different. So far I haven’t felt excluded except with some children. I’m hoping that by next week I will memorize the children’s names and correct spelling.

Journal Entry 2

This week was a little better the children are beginning to respond well when I speak to them. I’ve learned this week that lesson plans never go as well as expected. I have witnessed that the children in this classroom are not as advanced as the Hispanic children I worked in preschool over the summer. Because of this I will be adjusting my lesson plans according to what I have seen the children are familiar with.

Journal Entry 3 I had an embarrassing moment this week with a flannel board song. I sung the song once and when the children asked for me to sing it again I completely forgot the lyrics and chorus. From this experience I will practice my songs more than 3 to 4 times as well as calm myself so I am not so nervous. This week I also made shape necklaces with the children and they really enjoyed it so I was pleased.

Journal Entry 4 Two of the children call me by name which is very rewarding for myself. I feel like the children are getting comfortable with me. A lot of children have invited me to play with them in the classroom as well as on the playground. Children from other classrooms are also being very friendly and asking to play games with me. I am feeling a lot more comfortable with what I am doing with

    There were two Caucasian students, seven African-American students, and six Mexican students. Mrs. Brodie was the teacher and Ms. Johnson was the teacher assistant. The classroom was large and there was plenty of space for the children to move about. The classroom structure was very similar to that of the 3-year-old classroom that I observed in my first field observation. There was also a carpet on the floor for circle time and the classroom was divided up into centers as well. The centers were clearly labeled. Some of the centers included reading, art, science, manipulatives, and blocks. As I stated before it was very similar to the 3-year-old classroom set-up. The classroom was filled with print and there were many different aspects of cultural references which included posters in the Spanish language and books that represented the different diversity of all of the students. The classroom was like the 3-year-old classroom amplified.
