Joyeux Noel Symbolism
The time is World War I and soldiers are stationed on the Western Front; bloody warfare occurs daily and death is consistently around the corner; but what about on Christmas? Will the fighting continue or will they stop for a ceasefire? This film focuses on that and is titled “Joyeux Noel” and was released in 2005. Christian Carion directed this historical drama, which features Diane Kruger, Benno Fürmann, Gary Lewis, Guillaume Canet as some of the leads and many other actors. Throughout the movie, there is a stark difference between light and dark, such as lighting in various parts of the production and props used as symbols of light and rejoice. The light side shows the humanity of the soldiers and their comradery, while the dark side shows the reality and cruelty of war and most of the authoritative figures of the war are on this side.
This movie takes place in the year 1914 and is located in a section of the Western Front where the French and Scottish are at war with the Germans. Fighting is occurring very frequently in the time leading up to Christmas, but the soldiers cannot bear to fight at this sacred time. Because of this the superiors at the front agree on a “Christmas Truce” and there will be peace for a few days. Everyone on the front enjoys it and has a good time mingling with the other troops, but some higher-ups do not approve of

The two sides are the light and more positive side which shows more humanity and thoughtfulness and the darker and more negative side that show the nasty and inevitable death that occurs in war. This movie is definitely not for everyone. On the contrary, people who enjoy history movies are sure to enjoy it, especially since it is fairly true to the facts of World War I. Anybody who enjoys a twist on the common “good people win” story will enjoy it as well. This movie is definitely worth

There was no bad seat to be had. Every single chair afforded a view all the way around the stage. I noticed the large wooden boxes in the middle of the floor (stage) which looked like ammunition crates. Actors walked in dressed in clothing to resemble Army attire, and sat down on the crates. As they talked amongst themselves the two main characters, Bob Wallace and Phil Davis, enter to the left of me. Chatting for a few moments with their troop, getting them rallied up for a night of holiday merriment, when they begin to sing “White Christmas”. It was sad to watch the faces of the troop as they begin to think about being home for the holidays, and wondering if they would return home safely. The actor portraying Bob Wallace seems to be looking straight into my eyes as he sings, and I actually feel myself start to tear up, and imagine what it was like to be so far from home during the holidays. No family, no home cooked dinner or presents to unwrap. Only the sounds of war in the distance. The fun is broken up by old General Waverly as he shouts for everyone to head to the barracks for sleep. As he proceeds to yell at the troops everyone is startled by the sound of an explosion. Waverly quickly stops Wallace and Davis and quietly thanks them for showing the troops a little fun in such an uncertain time. I sat through the…

Is it just me or are the holidays in America becoming more and more commercialized? The original purposes for holidays are swept under the rug and it is all about what we can get. It was November 9th and I was driving home from school, flipping through radio stations when I heard the Christmas carols. I yelled, “NO!” and completely shut the radio off. It was not even Thanksgiving yet and they were playing Christmas music! Since Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, I was a little put off by this. Why are they playing these songs already? What about Thanksgiving? Heck, what about Hanukkah? Why aren’t there Thanksgiving carols? That is when I decided I was going to write…

When reading a book it is very important to read between the lines, to catch the hidden meanings and metaphors that lie within its pages. " A Separate Peace " is no exception as it is filled with metaphors which give the novel a concealed meaning and teach the reader about many things including the immense impact of World War II on people of the era. This essay will identify and explore some of them in order to further understand John Knowles' novel and the message he wanted to get across. Finny's Clothes, The Winter Carnival, Blitzball, and The Tree are all adequate examples of metaphors in this tale as they all have double meanings that bring the reader into a whole new world, one filled with mystery and wonder. Metaphors play an amazingly important role in this novel as they transform it from a plain story into a complex one, where simple things represent a greater, intricate reality.…
