In George Orwell’s Animal Farm, he shows how leadership can be good or bad. He informs the readers of the difference between leaders and dictators throughout the story. Old Major, Napoleon and Snowball were prime examples of leadership.
One leader that stands out the most in the story is Old Major. Old Major died is a very wise leader because he taught the animals to have peace amongst each other and not war. Old Major shows his humble qualities well before he dies in the second chapter of the book. “I have to little more to say I merely repeat remember always your duty of enmity towards man and all his ways. Whatever goes up upon two legs is an enemy.”(Orwell,11) In this quote Old Major explains to the animals that man doesn’t care about them. It’s very clear that Old Major is a leader not a dictator. He believes in equality among all the animals in the farm because he knows they are all equal and have a right to sport their own opinion. “Weak or strong clever or simple, we a real brothers no animal must ever kill any other animal all animals are equal. (Orwell,11) Old Major spoke these wise words to the animals because he didn’t want the animals to fight each other. Majority of the animals (including Old Major) were pigs so the other animals thought it would to take advantage of them throughout the novel.
Another strong leader in the story is Napoleon. Unlike Old Major, Napoleon is more of a dictator. He figured after Old Major he dictate over the farm. “Napoleon, with the dogs following him now mounted on to the raised portion of the floor where Major had previously stood to deliver his speeches he announced from now on Sunday morning meetings will end. (Orwell,54). In this quote Napoleon feels that the meetings are “unnecessary” because he wanted to control everything. He also knew that the pigs conducted them every Sunday in honor of Old Major. Napoleon continued to show his demanding ways as tension began to rise in the farm. “Throughout the spring and summer they worked on a sixty-hour week and in August Napoleon announced that there would be work on Sunday afternoons as well” (Orwell,59). Napoleon always made the animals work day in and day out just to torture them. He took advantage of all the animals. He took away the pigs freedoms when he took away the Sunday meetings, he is making the animals work for nothing and he excludes the dogs from the bunch because he uses them as fake police men to help dictate and overrule. It’s obvious the he is a power hungry creature.
The last leader that stands out in the book is Snowball. Snowball is one the best leaders in the book because he stood his ground to Napoleon whenever needed. Snowball took Old Majors wise words to heart and out them to use. He was a mature enough not to fight back when Napoleon caused chaos to the farm. He simply came up with ways to destroy Napoleon’s evil masterminds. In this quote snowball is showing his leadership. “At the meetings Snowball often won over the majority by his brilliant speeches, but Napoleon was better at canvassing support for himself in between times (Orwell, 54) Snowball knew what he needed to do to win the crowd over. He fought mentally fought Napoleon with mental ideas and facts, that’s why Napoleon wanted to sabotage his life. “Snowball was a more vivacious pig than Napoleon, quicker in speech and more inventive, but was not considered to have the same depth of character.” (Orwell, Chapter 2). Snowball is a very outgoing person. He speaks for what he believes to get his point across. He only does all these things because he cares for the farm and because he wants peace like Old Major.
Overall, Leadership takes a very big role in this story. Animal Farm makes readers understand that not just anyone can be a leader. They have to be qualified, humble and not a dictator.

Irony is visible in the fact that the leaders the animals though they wanted, eventually become the exact same as the leader they overthrew. Orwell uses this powerful irony to illustrate the deeper idea pervading the story--the issue was not a matter of who had complete power, but a matter of whether one leader should have absolute power at all. The animals thought that their issue was with the fact that a human was in control. The animals of Manor Farm believed that if only an animal was in control, then they would have the utopian society that Old Major had dreamt of. However, Orwell promptly shows that this is not the case, but quite the contrary. Orwell shows through the animals of Animal Farm, that it makes no difference who the leader is if they have absolute power. Power has a way of corrupting people, a fact that Orwell knew to be true, and he uses his masterful literary skills to illustrate this…

Certainly the ramifications of oppression and absolute authority are outrage and this is conveyed throughout Animal Farm. Old Major tries to convince them that the reason behind their servitude and despair is Man, because Major believes that "Man is the only real enemy [they] have" (Orwell 7). Through expressing his anger, Major criticizes the fact that Man does not lay eggs or give milk, "yet he is the lord of all animals" (Orwell 8). It is clear-cut that the animals are affected by Major's speech which urges them to obtain their freedom. Major's point of view is that "all men are enemies. All animals are comrades" (Orwell 10). From here, the reader can deduce that Old Major represents V. I. Lenin, the leader of the Bolshevic Party that seized…

In the novel Animal Farm, George Orwell hints that power corrupts through the use of an allegorical storyline. By using historical criticism, one can analyze the causes and effects of ruthless ambition. During the WWII era, there was widespread corruption in many nations, as seen in Germany with Hitler and Russia with Stalin. This time period of chaos exposed the lack of compassion among humans. Similar to this era, there were cultural and political struggles among the humans and animals in the farm as well. Ironically, in the animal’s struggle to free themselves of human dictatorship they end up oppressing their own kind.…

“The supreme quality for leadership is unquestionably integrity. Without it, no real success is possible,” declared Dwight D. Eisenhower, the thirty-fourth president of the United States. In George Orwell’s allegory Animal Farm, the boar Napoleon, who rises to power following the overthrow of Farmer Jones, does not demonstrate integrity. As the story progresses, Orwell gradually exposes Napoleon as a self-centered, manipulative dictator. Like his real-life counterpart, Josef Stalin, Napoleon cares little for the wellbeing of his followers and employs deception and brutality to maintain control. Under his rule, the peaceful socialist government in which the beasts take pride deteriorates into a harsh totalitarian one. Because of his self-seeking…

Old Major also holds some of the power of the farm, till he dies before the revolution. Old Major was more confident than ever. Old Major, Napoleon, and Snowball sat at the front of the meetings that were held by the farm animals. At these meetings, they also set the seven commandments for the farm. Technically, even though Old Major was the so called ¨leader¨, Napoleon was the leader in reality. He patiently waited for Old Major to die so he could be the ruler. The pigs taught themselves how to read. They built themselves a windmill. They were also the organizers of various committees. They would also ensconced any disputes. They made sure the other animals worked their butts off while Napoleon got fat and changed the commandments just so he would not get in…

Rebellion is a new hope for many, but a corrupt leader may change the definition of freedom overtime. A leader would make everyone believe in them and when are right, but slowly change into a power hungry ruler. Many counties have experience with this kind of rulers such as the Costa Rica or Russia, who took over at the country’s weakest time. George Orwell, Eric Arthur Blair, writes Animal Farm based on the Russian Rebellion that happened in 1917. As Russia rebels, the rebellion leaders slowly took power and changes the aspect of their rebellion. Our society reflects upon freedom and our choices, rulers may not affect us in the same way as they would in a monarchy or dictatorship. Our leader is chosen by us while in Animal Farm, their leader, Napoleon is chosen by him gaining power and fear over the animals and being automatically chosen for power since no one else to opposes him. Leadership in this book is chosen by corrupt power and fear over the animals which isn’t reflected in the leaders in our society and community, but is recognized in places by leaders before.…

Determining the rights of non-human animals and deciding how to treat them may not be a choice available to our human society. As an advocate for the rights of animals, Tom Reganʻs three main goals are to abandon the use of animals in any scientific research, discontinue all commercial animal agriculture, and to completely terminate both commercial and sport animal hunting. To support these intentions, Regan argues that every human and non-human animal possesses inherent value, which makes them all more than a physical object or vessel. He then states that possessing inherent value allows every human and non-human to have rights of their own. To further his argument, Regan claims that the any human and non-human retaining rights requires equal treatment and respect from others. To conclude his argument, Regan states that due to these reasons, non-human animals cannot be treated as resources and must be treated by humans as equals. In this paper, I object to Reganʻs third premise, which states that non-human and human animals must be treated as equals and with respect, because our communication barrier with non-human animals restricts us from determining their notion of equal treatment or respect, and that attempting to do so could…

Whenever there is power, leadership usually follows closely behind. With this in mind, Mind Tools Editorial Team explains perfectly the true meaning of leadership. It reads, "A particular danger in these situations is that people or organizations that are being managed by such an individual or group think they're being led, but they're not. There may actually be no leadership at all, with no one setting a vision and no one being inspired. This can cause serious problems in the long term." In Animal Farm Napoleon wasn't leading the animals, he was managing them. Squealer himself implied that Napoleon was a great leader, but never realized what he truly said. In Animal Farm, it reads, "Years passed. The seasons came and went, the short animal…
