Feelings of unrest and revolution were circulating in Santo Domingo as early as when
Duarte was 8 years old. The Español rule was far from favorable, and the social elite in Santo
Domingo declared independence from España. This was short lived, as Haití quickly moved to occupy the country to “protect” its inhabitants from Europeo rule. Duarte was the forerunner in opposing Haití’s oppressive rule, and founded La Trinitaria independence group when he was 25 years old to oppose the system. (Carl Goodwin, 2008)
Duarte tried to not engage the oppressive rule directly, but rather he peacefully resisted as
Gandhi and MLK have done since. Duarte was not quite as extreme in his beliefs, but he never battled occupying forces initially. He resisted by using boycotting techniques, sabotage, and merely not cooperating with the installed regime. One of the forefronts of La Trinitaria’s efforts were its other groups(La Filantrópica and La Dramática) that staged theatre performances to spread separatist ideas and revolutionary thoughts.
