In the first decade of 1500, Juan Ponce de Leon built settlements in Hispaniola (Modern day Haiti and Dominican Republic), started farms, and constructed defenses in hopes of establishing an island colony for Spain. On his journey he did many things. Historical encounters with the Caribbean people on Puerto Rico are vague, but it seems there was series of military engagements with no clear outcome.
