Judgement Day
I was dripping with sweat; my hands could not even grip the ball. I was so nervous, but also so ready. I did all the workouts as hard as I could, and even though some individuals played better than me, I still thought it was a done deal. The coach was going down the line cutting certain players right there and then, when he got to me, I thought he was going to skip right over me, but he didn’t. He told me I was not ready to be on this team yet, and I needed to work on my game and tryout next year. I was devastated; I could not believe it, I had thought I deserved to be on that team, but the coach did not. Without that day, I would not be here playing basketball on a scholarship for Wheeling Jesuit University. That day taught me so much. I came into that basketball tryout overconfident, like I had made the team already because I thought I was that good. In eighth grade I was the man in basketball. I could not be stopped. I was always the first one picked and always got the ball whenever I wanted because my teammates knew I could score. When I got into the basketball tryout though, everybody was good and I should have worked twice as hard as I did. This meant that everyone was one step ahead of me, quicker than me, faster than me, and stronger that me. Even though I was devastated about being cut from the team, the experience taught me not to be overconfident, work harder, and always go into something knowing I have to prove myself. I was so arrogant coming into that tryout like the spot on the team was already mine. That is not a very good trait to have because nothing is ever given in life; there is always someone out there trying to be better than someone else. I was so overconfident that I didn’t do as many drills as I should have, or conditioned as much as I needed too. There were people at the tryouts that could shoot better than me, play better defense, basically doing everything better than I could that day. Next time I told myself I would not

When the first game came I was extremely happy yet nervous also. We ended up winning the game by the score of three runs to two although I did not get to bat at all and was put in only for two innings of defense. I was disappointed that I did not get to play much but I was happy with the win. Our second game was the next day and I hoped to get more playing time then. When that day came it turned out that we were playing an extremely skilled team. We were losing three to one in the last inning and I still hadn’t played at all the whole game. One of my friends hit a double and then another one of my teammates hit a single to knock him in to score. The score was now three to two and we had a chance to come back. My coach then decided that we needed someone faster on the bases so he called for a…

However, I was in a package against Big Lake and I shut down receiver. The following week in practice while I was working harder than even Coach Herberg came up to me and said “I’m starting you at the corner this week. You had a good game and you deserve it. Good job kid.” We were playing Willmar and I was very nervous. It was my first varsity start. Coaches said that was normal and said for me to relax. I played extremely well and I was very proud of myself. The following three weeks I have started and became more confrontable with playing on Friday night. My focus level was as high as ever and I was improving my talent day by day. Hard work does really pay off. I worked hard and did my job throughout the year and on the field. I listened to my coaches and stayed true to myself and I sure did pay off. I’m playing varsity and had kept the promise I had with myself last…

A memory from my athletics that will stick with me forever was the last time I was able to lace up and play basketball on our home court. We played a long time rival, Aquin. The game was down to the wire and I was able to tie the game with 24 seconds left. Then we got the ball back and Ellie was fouled with about a second left, which if anyone on our team were to be put on the line, I would choose her. She went up and swooshed the first shot! Then, since Aquin wouldn't be able to get the rebound, make it down the court, and shoot with the time left, coach told her to miss the second shot. Ellie then winded up and chucked the ball right off the backboard so they ended up getting the ball out of bounds anyway. We blocked the throw in, and I ran…

I stood up and walked down the stairs to the court. The team and I went to the locker room like we always do at the end of the third quarter of the girl’s varsity game. Our opponent? The number one team in the state of Kansas, the Hanover Wildcats. With only two seniors, our team had a record that you don’t exactly brag about.…

AND ONE!!!! It was the last basketball game of my sophomore season. We played Stagg at Home, in the main gym. Everyone was there because it was the last game and it was at home. Coach Thompson substituted me for Darius with 5 minutes and 42 seconds left to play, we were already up 10 so he just emptied out his bench to give everyone some final playing time. When I got in I instantly caught fire. I don’t know what got into me I just couldn’t miss, even if I wanted to. I was making mid- range shots, 3’s and I was also getting to the basket. My first shot was a pull up jumper about 15 feet away from the basket, it was nothing but net. After I made that shot I felt as if I could do anything, so I kept scoring. When I made my first 3, the team basically…

This month is crucial for anyone who wants to get a hint of playing time on Friday nights. Any of the guys who play football will do anything to get on the field, if a coach asks you to play a position they will do it just to get playing time. In my situation, I had two seniors fighting for my spot on the offensive line. I knew that both of them did not want to sit on the sidelines and watch some sophomore play in a spot they could of had. So the month of july I had to play and do almost everything perfect to earn a spot on varsity football. The camp was just wrapping up and I was to be told if I was going to be stay or be brought back down to the sophomore level. It was a super hot Wednesday, I could see the heat beating off the black track. As waves of heat beamed up of the turf /Coach came up to with the sternest look on his…

It is the nights before tryouts and I could not sleep after I finally went to sleep, I got up about 5 hours later. Tryouts started at 5 O’clock in the morning. I was devastated. My entire offseason of hard work would be put to waste. I realized that unless I wanted my season to be ruined I had to find another way to help my team out. One way I helped my team was by learning how to keep score of baseball games so that one of my coaches didn’t have to do it during the game. I also made it to almost every game during that season so I could cheer my team on. At the end of the season, my coach came up to me and told me how much he appreciated how I made an effort to support our team even though I couldn’t participate. This made me realize how much of an impact I had made even though I hadn’t played.…

I was fourteen years old just starting my new chapter of life at Hamilton High School. I did not really know what to expect from high school but the year started great. I was having fun in my classes and made some great friends. However, I was nervous about the Varsity Golf team tryout. I played golf for about a year leading up to the tryout not knowing what to expect. I felt like I had a really great chance of making the team and join a varsity team at Hamilton.…

Why? Oh yea, that is right. My basketball coach was a selfish woman, who only coached us to receive a paycheck. After the completion of my junior year, even though it was miserable, I at least thought I would be able to still start on varsity and see playing time on the court. There I was again being wrong. She never let me play. I did not understand why and I still do not, I mean all we had added to the team from last year were a couple of new freshmen. I am not trying to sound disrespectful towards anyone, but they were not outstanding players who stood out against everyone on the team. It did not make any sense for a player to start every game of their junior year to only start two games of their senior year. Yes I said only two. I was devastated and could never figure out what I had done wrong. I even went to talk with the dreadful Coach E multiple times to see if she had answers for me, I just kept getting well if you stepped it up in practice things could change. I took that to heart thinking she actually meant it. But not to my surprise she went again lying, I gave it my all and the starting lineup still stayed the same. It was heart breaking to see a woman who I thought liked me and though of me as a good basketball player kick me to the side. What bothered me even more was I got hurt during a game. I was hurt so bad that I was out for over a month. My left MCL had tearing in it so I had to give it rest. Most coaches would call or text to check on you a couple days after the injury, but my coach did not. She obviously did not care what happened to me or if I ever returned to basketball. It is sad to say but at this point in the season I was almost happy to be hurt, I did not have to listen to her screaming or being punished all the time. I hated to feel that way towards basketball, but in all honesty Coach E made me hate the game. Coach E made me hate her. She could not have been more…

It was the day that most freshmen dread, cuts day. There were many of us trying out for the JV baseball team- more people than there were positions. I could see it, I would be starting catcher on the JV baseball team. I had made it passed the first two weeks of tryouts and I was so confident that I was going to make it. That was, until on that last day of tryouts when the two coaches pulled me out of a drill and told me they wanted to talk to me.…

I was 9 years old on a soccer team in a school called Brightwood. We have a soccer game every Thursday and Brightwood was going against a school called Truesdell. I was warming up for the game and our coach was giving a speech about our tactics for winning the game and not losing focus of the game. My coach said “today is not the day to be a star, but to play as one”. Most of the players weren't focused on my coach's speech. I heard what the coach had said, but I had my own plans, I felt excited l that this will be the game I can prove that I am a someone.…

I was very respectful but wanted to know why he would treat me the way he did. Finally as the JV season ended, the varsity coaches approached me and told me they were proud of how I responded to the adversity and brought me up to play on varsity. As a sophomore that was a big deal to me. What I learned from that situation is that as long as you keep your composure, talk with the others to see their point of view, and always keep working hard, you will always conquer the adversity no matter what. I had to deal with constant adversity for almost 5 months but I beat it and learned a big life lesson. I am glad I went through that basketball…

I was extremely nervous despite the fact that everyone had told me I was going to make varsity since I had done so well at camp. There were about 23 people trying out for varsity and only 18 could make it and so I had a good chance at making the team but that still did not calm my nerves. Before we went out to the brand new turf field for tryouts I was psyching myself out and was doubting myself in all ways possible. My hands were shaking, I was sweating, all while listening to the calm chatter of everyone else echoing loudly in the locker room. “You can’t make varsity; the others are just too good” I was telling myself. During tryouts the pace was fast, the humidity was high, and our spirits were just as high. We had to do lots of ball work and ball skills on the first day and I was messing up completely at times. At one point I screamed out in utter anger because I just could not get my feet to do the correct things. I was so angry with myself because I knew I could do better than what I had done that day. I went home feeling utterly defeated but ready for the next day because there were two days of tryouts. The next day I felt absolutely great and I was doing everything right! I was passing every drill while receiving complements from my coaches. I felt great and as I was walking up the big, blue steps to the locker room, I knew that I had done great at…
