Every person has an identity or some defining features that can be used to describe them. Identity can be either the way that one perceives their self, or how one is perceived by others. However, certain aspects of identity can cause harm to an individual. This harm can be both at the hands of others or at the fault of the person in question. Things such as a person’s appearance and clothing, morals and past actions, socioeconomic status, or even a person’s habit or habits can cause them harm in one way or another.

Bad habits can range from biting your nails, to smoking so there are quite a lot of negative tendencies people can have. One particular example of this is shown in the short story “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” by James Thurber. Mitty’s habit is daydreaming. His vivid daydreams nearly cause him physical harm at two points in the story. The first instance is when his daydream happens behind the wheel of his car. If his wife had not snapped him out of it by saying “Not so fast! You’re driving too fast!” (Thurber 1), then he could have been in an accident. The second instance is once again when he is behind the wheel of his car, but this time he almost hit another car. This time, he is brought out of his dream by a parking attendant shouting “Look out for that Buick!” (Thurber 2). There are many habits that people have that cause affect them negatively. It is a part of a person’s identity that can directly harm them. Some are severe and some are not as severe, yet they still negatively impact the
