“Never shall I forget that night, the first night in camp, that turned my life into one long night seven times sealed.” (Night 24) Never shall I forget reading that bone chilling quote from Elie Wiesel’s novel Night, Taking place during one of the darkest periods of human history. 6 million lives lost and countless families destroyed with one goal in mind; Exterminate the Jews. Throughout his novel Wiesel experiences many instances of hope and hopelessness, as many of us do. Without hope many things that we try to accomplish could not be done, hope is what helps us carry on and survive, Night proves this point.…
“I learned after the war the fate of those who stayed behind in the hospital. They were quite simply liberated by the Russians two days after the evacuation.” This quote was from the book Night by Elie Wiesel illustrates the uncertainty of Jews during World War II. The book memoirs Wiesel’s unforgettably experiences when he was taken from his home in Sighet, Hungary to Auschwitz concentration camp, and then to Buchenwald concentration camp. Throughout the book, Wiesel learns many things. A more important lesson that Wiesel learned during his imprisonment was that when opportunities arise, take them.…
In the book “Night”, Elie Wiesel displays loyalty and solidarity within his relationship with his father even through the horrid obstacles he had to endure. Wiesel demonstrated to us readers that his love for his father was a stronger force for survival than the selfish idea for self-preservation. He also demonstrated how having little faith can conquer and that a person should not lose faith no matter how hard the challenges are. As times became harder, their relationship became stronger. Although their relationship transformed, Elie had to face burden and guilt towards the end of their journey.…
Media depicts women in a subordinate role in relation to men. Media objectifies hyper-sexualized representations of women in order to appeal to the male viewer. Codes of Gender unveils methods used in photography to perpetuate the idea that females are dehumanized subordinate objectified figures. These codes or methods include various actions, poses, or positions female models are forced to perform. For example, the feminine touch, the bashful knee bend, the head tilt, poses lying down, etc. all of which subordinate the female figure in relation to men. Miss Representation gives a broader view into society’s representation of women within media. The film emphasizes the impossible ideal standard, the hyper-sexualization, the objectification, and scrutinization, women must undergo to achieve any type of success in our current society. Miss Representation focuses on the average viewer, whereas Codes of Gender appeals more to intellectual viewer. Although each film takes a different perspective, both address issues women face in society as represented and visualized through media. One thing is clear; media is directly linked to societal beliefs. In order for one to change, we must address and change the…
The issue that has been persistent for as long as one can remember is Misogyny in the society. The belief that women are inferior to men has been contaminating the human mind. The issue can be commonly seen in the society in form of domestic abuse, violence, objectification in name of advertisements, and especially in the music industry where the lyrics are filled with hateful messages towards women. Even though the governing laws consider men and women as equal, but the mistreatment of women continues to be the headline of every newspaper.…
Many Jews in Sighet chose not to believe the warnings from Meadle the beadle who caught glimpses of the full horror. Many people clung to the belief that his reports were exaggerated because contemplating the truth was too horrible. Even Elie who heard of Meadle’s stories took pity on him not fully aware of what was to come. The Jews of Sighet caught glimpses of what waited for them unwilling to believe in Hitler’s plan or escape whatever was to come. Until the Jews experienced first-hand the horrors that existed, they cannot believe that such horrors exist. On the first train to the first labor camp Elie felt optimistic when arriving to Auschwitz saying “Confidence soared. Suddenly we felt free of the previous nights’ terrors. We gave thanks to God.” (Wiesel 27). When arriving to the camp Elie became more optimistic when he started to find people he knew still alive, even in these dark times he was able to find happiness. Not only did Elie have this mind set but the others in the camp as well they believed the war was about to end, even though there was no clear sign. Upon hearing that they were bought to Auschwitz to be killed the younger Jews wanted to rebel while the older ones told them to rely on faith. In the midst of religious persecution the Jews managed to look on the brighter side of things…

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, 86 percent of mothers who give birth out-of-wedlock are teenagers. MTV’s show “16 & Pregnant,” which has only been on air since June 2009, is already reflecting the rapid boom in teenage pregnancy across various cities in America. Since the early eighties MTV has been considered somewhat of a cultural phenomenon for American adolescents and its depiction of gender has a strong impact that continues to this day (Holtzman 2000). Created by Morgan J. Freeman (director of teen shows Dawson’s Creek and Laguna Beach), the show “16 & Pregnant” has been said to be guilty of exacerbating, normalizing and even glorifying teen pregnancy. Perhaps, it’s just reflecting a current social dilemma occurring amongst female youth. Each week a new episode revolves around a different girl struggling with the challenges of teenage pregnancy. The network presents these characters as “real”, plucked from the grips of reality, validated and “chosen” to represent some sort of normalized or otherwise glamorized middle-class identity of teenage motherhood. The show depicts women’s roles that are often typified to include traditional gendered norms of heterosexual relationships, marriage, motherhood and femininity. “16 & Pregnant” serves as a platform to broadcast what is seen as a stereotypical American culture that is now engulfing teen girls everywhere. The social identities MTV presents reinforces those of traditional female roles and gender norms and attempts to establish a new model for pregnant teens in a modern age.…

At a very early age, we were taught to be boys or girls by various gender socialization agents. Because of the emphasis of these socialization agents, we can hardly change the images of boys and girls, or men and women. When a baby is born, parents would dress the baby in blue if it is a boy or in pink if it is a girl. At school, teachers may ask boys to do heavy works and girls to do something easy. However, the most powerful gender socialization agent is the mass media. The images of boys and girls, or men and women, presented by the mass media are distinct, and they have had a great effect on the development of our gender roles.…
