Artemisia Gentileschi
Artemisia Gentileschi was born in Rome on July 8th, 1593, and was thought to have died in 1653. Judith Slaying Holofernes is an Italian painting by Artemisia created in the baroque period, it was officially completed within 1614 to about 1620. She did it on an Oil Canvas. The dimensions of this Oil Canvas are 158.8 cm × 125.5 cm ((6' 6" X 5' 4") 78.33 in × 64.13 in). The location of this painting is in a museum called “National Museum of Capodimonte, Naples”. Her work was depicted by many artists, including these five artists, Giorgione, Titian, Rembrandt, Peter Paul Rubens and Caravaggio. Did you know that Artemisia was raped? And that her rapist got away without any trouble and was released? I just thought he would have gotten in trouble for it. Artemisia painted pictures of strong and suffering women, mainly about myth and the bible – victims, suicides, and warriors. She was the most respected artist of her time. Artemisia had 15 paintings that were at least recognized. I think that maybe more of her artwork should be noticed.

I was given the artwork “Judith Slaying Holofernes” I would describe this piece as very gruesome and bloody but it also has a really good story behind it!. I think what really popped out towards me was the fact that it was two women that decapitated him, and the story behind it was really good. It is an Oil Canvas, 6.5” by 5.3” Feet. It is in the Collection of the Uffizi Gallery, Florence Italy. The colors in the artwork make it look a lot better with some of the contrast in it. And the shapes, forms and lines are really good! You can tell how much

The piece of Art, Smiling Girl, a Courtesan Holding an Obscene Image, painted by Gerrit van Honthorst in 1625 can be seen at the Saint Louis Art Museum. I was initially drawn to this image from across the gallery mostly due to the subject’s bright red dress with gold sleeves, it was one of the brightest colored images in the gallery. It is about three feet tall and two feet wide, it is an oil on canvas painting. As I approached the image, I was still intrigued as the image she is holding is of a naked man facing away, the subject in the painting seems to get enjoyment from this. To me this piece of art makes me curious, I want to know who this woman was and why she is holding that image. The artist seems to be communicating the importance of…

The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston contains some of the greatest treasures of the Italian Renaissance, and not least among these is Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple, painted in 1467 by Bartolomeo d. Giovanni Corradini, better known as Fra Carnevale. This Urbinian painter and architect produced some of the greatest architectural paintings of the early Renaissance, and his techniques expressed an interest in the progression of the Italian Renaissance style of classical idealism. The Presentation, measuring 57 5/8 x 38 in., depicts the apocryphal story of the Virgin Mary’s Presentation in the Temple of Jerusalem by her parents at the age of three. Executed in oil and tempera on panel, the work frames a young Virgin in purple by the grand, classical architecture of the Temple. The entire work confers an atmosphere of contrast: the softness of Mary’s companions with the sharply defined, half-nude beggars, the religious with the classical reliefs, the tiny Virgin with the enormous architecture, and the brightly lit interior with the cloudy sky. Fra Carnevale creates a mysterious, yet orderly, scene of subtle emotion and veiled heterogeneity.…

Artemisia’s mother died when she was young, leaving her dad as the main source of influence in what she would do for a living. Art in the late 1500’s and 1600’s was primarily created by men, therefore leaving a window of opportunity for Artemisia. At first she was excluded from studios, but that would simply not…

When Artemisia was 12 years old, her mom died. She was mainly taught by her father, who was also another praised artist. He taught her many different skills and also introduced her to several different artists around Italy. A lot of whom she plucked inspiration from in her paintings. One of the most known being Caravaggio. “Susanna and the Elders” was one of her earliest paintings. When she got older, her father asked one of his colleagues, Agostino Tassi, to further teach Artemisia. Unfortunately, Tassi raped her. This case was brought into court and he was put on trial. Tassi was later found guilty and was exiled from Rome. The news of her rape ruined her reputation.…

After visiting the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, I will write about four art works. The first one is called Salome Receiving the Head of St. John the Baptist by Andrea Solario. The work is very colorful, and it shows chiaroscuro with the dark background and light on the faces of Salome and John the Baptist. The focal point is on John’s head. This is one of Solario’s most notable works, and the figure style is influenced by Leonardo Da Vinci. The story behind the painting is that Herodias had a quarrel with John the Baptist, and would have killed him herself. Instead, her daughter, Salome, danced for Herod and he was so pleased that he said he would give her anything she asked for. She asked for John the Baptist’s head on a platter at her mother’s urging. I believe I was interested in this work because I already knew about the subject matter, but I don’t think you have to know a lot about the art before entering the museum to be interested in it.…

    Lot's Daughters

The artwork I selected is Lot & Daughters by Orazio Gentileschi. The piece is on display at the Getty Museum and was painted in 1622. This piece is a dynamic, wonderful example of the baroque style. Gentileschi’s strong use of chiaroscuro makes the painting seem to be a living scene being viewed from the other side of a window. His use of the three primary colors for the three subjects clearly defines each of them; while still creating color harmony. The subject matter is the story of the city of Sodom from the book of Genesis. Lot and his family are saved by God as He destroys the evil inhabitants of Sodom. Lot’s wife is turned to a pillar of salt when she turns back to the city, leaving only Lot and the girls as survivors. Having no faith that their lineage will continue, Lot’s daughters get him to drink wine (as the flask and goblet on the left side of the painting elude to) and each lie with him in order to get pregnant. They each have a son and the lineage continues even to include David and Jesus.…

If I burn these drawing, it would be a huge loss of art history. If I’m not, the girl will die. But the decision is still there to be made, I burn them without any hesitant. If the world blame me for this, so all I could say to defend myself is that even when the paintings are priceless, I always believe saving people is the highest priority. Further explanation is that our world is in the postwar period, human resources would be needed more than ever before, and the children would be the future of human kind. To save this girl is just like saving one more hope for the world, which make this girl live matter than any drawings in this museum, and this make my decision more rightful in every…
