Leading a multitude of people to find the "truth" about a village's most respected townspeople is Abigail Williams. She was the finger that accused dozens of people, who in all likelihood were innocent of the crimes brought against them. Abigail was not the single candle that showed the judges of Salem the way but merely the candle that lit the others. Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" makes Abigail the conveyance of everything the Puritans would have thought as evil. She had committed sins that made any upright citizen flinch at the mere mention of them. All this appalling information about Abigail makes a person stop and wonder what her motive was. Was she merely being selfish or is there a deeper meaning hidden beneath all the layers she is covering her past with?…

In 1692, in the town of Salem, Massachusetts, several young girls experienced a conjured illness, triggering the beginning of mass hysteria in the town. The unexplained illnesses were thought to be the devil’s doing; using witches to stain the town. The hysteria spread within the strictly religious town and allowed for revenge and old jealousies to be rekindled. Women and men fell victim to the young girls and were condemned to hang. The unimaginable events that took place became known as the Salem Witch Trials. The trials brought Arthur Miller to write The Crucible, depicting the unfortunate events. Throughout The Crucible, a young girl named Abigail Williams uses her cunningness and deceitfulness to get what she wants. Her jealousness and lack of moral and ethics gives her the ability to condemn innocent beings to death, without any questions.…

Society is going to judge people no matter what they do, so people might as well be who they want to be. In the crucible, during the Salam witch trials, Abigail Williams did what she wanted, she was not the typical Puritan, and definitely not a perfect one at that. She uses her acting skills and the girls around her to get others to believe the fake. Abigail Williams is not the perfect Puritan.…
