Leto’s approach to playing Rayon Real in Dallas Buyers Club was Inside/Out. He used Stanislavski’s system called ‘spiritual realism’ by completely emerging himself into the character he was playing. He never broke out of character while filming even his costars said that it felt like they were working with Rayon not Jared Leto. There are some elements that may make you think that Leto used an Outside/In approach because he actually lost a lot of weight, waxed his body and changing his dialect (physical and visual stimuli) but since he was trying to be as realistic as possible it makes it an Inside/Out approach. You could also see the psychological and mental changes that happened to the real Rayon Real (dealing with her sexuality, having AIDS,…
The movie “Fruitvale station” is a drama biographical film that follows Oscar Grant’s last day and the events leading up to his death. The audience gets a glimpse into Oscar Grant’s life and gets to see the chaos of his unnecessary death. Oscar Grant was a real person who was fatally shot at Fruitvale station, on New Year's day 2009, by a police officer. The incident seemed to happen so fast but it seems that Oscar and his friends were most likely stopped due to racial profiling. Oscar was by no means a saint, he had just been in jail a year earlier, but he was trying to move past it and better his life for his family.…
Introduction From the opening line, author Loretta Kelley shows not only her passion for mathematics, but also how she feels mathematics is not being taught properly by most instructors. Kelly’s appeals to her audience by telling how many current math teachers do not include the history of math in their curriculum. Kelly feels this is an area where instructors can help to make math interesting to the masses. Without seeming overly critical, Kelly does a wonderful job getting her point across by showing which specific areas math can correlate with history. In doing so, Kelley presents the idea teaching mathematical history can capture the attention and imagination of students.…
The 1961 movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s directed by Blake Edwards and based on the novel of the same name, is about Holly Golightly a young woman who is living independently as a socialite in New York during the 60’s. The movie is regarded as a large reflection of American culture and the different values and opinions that were held by many people during the time. The movie is also a great example of filmmaking in the mid-20th century and how it compares to today’s style of filmmaking.…
This movie stars Ferris Bueller, a sickening high school student who feels that he doesn't want to go to school that day so he decides to fake being sick to fool his parents into letting him stay home. His parents are nice and caring people who would never think that their son would lie and believe his horrible sick acting. He gets his girlfriend Sloan Peterson out of school by calling in to falsely report that one of her family members had died. He also gets his friend Cameron, who actually is sick, to join him and Sloan for a day in Chicago before they go off to different colleges. Two people rightfully don't believe Ferris' story: his sister and the Dean of Students. Ferris and friends take Cameron's father's car and go to a baseball game,…
Hannah Kent, in Burial Rites and Billie August in Les Miserables explore a variety of injustices as a product of prejudice by revealing the flaws of their Nineteenth Century social system. Although Kent released her novel in the 21st century, she thoroughly presents Nineteenth Century Iceland in all its formidable culture of prejudice and hardship to the same extent that August explores Nineteenth Century France in Les Miserables. Though both authors propose that one’s preconception of another rests in the position of their social class, August presents that as one’s social class changes, the prejudice changes towards them changes. This is different to Kent as she entices the readers to see the nature of men and their prejudice towards women…
This documentary is about eight women that share their experiences of what they have faced in their careers. It opens by one of the actresses saying that this industry is male dominated, and all opportunities are given priority to males then females. Throughout the progressive film era, the lives of everyday people have been impacted by the lives of those who were once considered average. The classic “Cinderella” story occurs more frequently than could be believed; poor and abused beings with a special gift who then work to create for themselves a safe haven. Hope, for them, is found amongst friends rather than amidst family. Though hard to envision a now popular celebrity surrounded by rags instead of riches, one such a person goes by the name of Julie Andrews. Julie Andrews, originally Julia Wells, was an esteemed woman of strong character.…
The movie, “The Breakfast Club,” by John Hughes takes place at a high school in Illinois, where 5 kids have to come in on a Saturday for detention. These kids are all teenagers going through different walks of life, under the responsibility of a “power-hungry” teacher. At the beginning of the movie, the kids start out practically hating all of each other. As the movie progresses, the kids begin to tell their stories, and you begin to know a little bit about each person. You begin to learn why the kids ended up in the detention in the first place and it makes what each think about the other a little different. Firstly, you have Andrew, the jock, who is there because he bullied a former teammate to try and impress his father. He realizes that…
It would be an honor to be a FBLA officer again this year and I have a lot of experience since I was the secretary for FBLA last year. I went to every single meeting and I came to all our school functions like trunk or treat and I donated to all our fundraisers. I had a blast last year being a part of this club and I enjoyed making decisions that influenced FBLA events. I am in many other clubs like SCA, Latin club, and book club because I love working with others and contributing to our community. I know I would be a great officer because I am very responsible, organized, and a motivated leader.…
The movie "A Bronx Tale" is obviously set in the Bronx and sets a young man Calogero Anello, "C" against the trials and tribulations of growing up incorruptible, in a neighborhood of mob crime and wayward minors. The movie holds characters that fit delinquency terms such as chronic offenders, and characters that fit theories such as the choice theory. Calogero at the end of the movie seems to have an identity crisis as mentioned by Erikson in his theory. Also characters show signs of being latent delinquents, and some characters seem to attribute their actions to the social learning theory. The movie as a whole is a great sign to see the varying degrees of delinquency especially in urban communities. I think the movie also gives people…
“The mythic origin of ‘the country we now know as the United States’ is at Plymouth Rock, and the year is 1620.” James W. Loewen stresses this origin as mythic due to the fact that for thousands of years humans had inhabited the land now known as America. Loewen goes on to describe the horrors the native peoples of America went through due to the diseases and other such terrible things the white “settlers” brought to the “New World.” However, it is barely mentioned in Loewen’s book, The Lies My Teacher Told Me, that the Separatists were acting upon a word of God, or Manifest Destiny. If Manifest Destiny were taken into account more, one would be able to provide a legitimate argument in favor of the Pilgrims’ intent. (Loewen, 77) The Separatists were members of a radical religious movement in England in the 16th and 17th centuries. William Brewster, in 1606, led a portion of this group to Leiden, the Netherlands, to avoid further religious oppression from the English government. Some members of this Separatist group then voted, ten years later, to relocate to America. In order for them to afford such a journey, the Separatists received funding from a group of London investors, in return for produce fro…
