Who is the real tragic hero? Many have come to this question when it comes to the play of Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare. Many scholars believe that the title of the play should be called Marcus Brutus instead of Julius Caesar because Julius Caesar was not the tragic hero of the play. A tragic hero is one that makes a mistake or mistakes that either lead to their death or their defeat. Brutus was the one who had the mistake of being over confident, was impatient and was gullible which led him to his down fall. Brutus was a man who was confident in what he did. Being confident in something was good but not all the time. Brutus was confident that the plans of killing Caesar were going to go as he wanted. “There is a tide in the affairs of men...” (IV.iii.218). Brutus told Cassius that when it is time to take action. Brutus is confident that he knows what he is doing. Yet Brutus planned to kill Caesar in a short amount of time meaning the plot was rushed. …show more content…
Brutus was also an impatient man.
He could not wait for the right time to do something. When he asked for something he wanted it right away. Since Brutus was impatient he rushed the plot of Caesar’s death. With being impatient comes a consequence. Brutus did not listen to Cassius’s idea to wait for their enemy’s to come instead he rushed it and that made the people of Rome mad at Brutus. This meant that the people of Rome where mad and were already planning the defeat of
Brutus. One of Brutus’s biggest flaws that led him to his death was gullibility. Brutus thought everyone was as honorable and nice as he was. Brutus failed to believe that. Brutus believed that Antony would be the best speaker for Caesar’s funeral oration just because he was one of Caesar’s dearest friends and thought he could make the crowd comfortable. “For Brutus' sake, I am beholding to you…”(III.ii.1605). Having Antony speak was not such a bad idea but having him have the last words is what caused a catastrophe. Brutus was an honorable man. Everyone loved him . “Live, Brutus! live, live!...” ( III.ii.1583). Despite that everyone loved him he had his flaws that cause him to his death. Brutus’s over confidence, impatience, gullibility made Brutus the true meaning of being a tragic hero. Brutus did not only make mistakes but also was true to his friend Caesar. The mistakes that Brutus made or was called to do because of who he was cause him to his tragic death.
