The first accounts of the Romans and their republic was in 754 B.C. The first great city was found along the Tiber River. From this city, Rome would grow to subdue all of present day Italy. But, along the way to glory they would face great tribulations from the fierce Carthaginian Empire. After many wars with the Carthaginians, the more militarized Rome would come on top. They defeated the Carthaginians and this allowed their empire to spread over the whole of the Mediterranean.

An empire, by definition, is“ a group of regions that are controlled by one ruler or one government; especially : a group of countries ruled by an emperor or empress ”. In contrast, a republic is “ a country that is governed by elected representatives and by an elected leader (such as a president) rather than by a king or queen “. The difference between these two is where the power to rule the country lies, whether it be an individual or many elected officials. Using these definitions it would be easy to make an argument that the Roman Republic was void much earlier than Octavian's transition to the first emperor Augustus, which is what textbooks and many historians will use to mark its end. There were several occasions in the Republic's history where power was transferred, or taken by force, to a single man for longer than the allowed office of dictator.…

A dictionary definition of a leader is a guiding hand in a movement or group. My definition of a leader is someone who stands out amongst the rest and steps up to the task and helps the “followers” advance and strive to become a leader as well. The only way a leader can be effective is by leading by example. A prime example of this is Malala Yousafzai. She was shot in the face for trying to go to school. If she hadn’t gone to school she wouldn’t have been shot, but she also wouldn’t have a Nobel Peace prize. She is now using her story to speak for access to education for everyone. A leader is someone who leads by example and uses their skills to help others succeed.…

In 60 BCE, he was able to use the support of the plebeians to form the first triumvirate, which was basically three people ruling Rome. The triumvirate consisted of Crassus, Pompey and Caesar. Pompey had the patricians supporting him, Caesar has the plebeians on his side, and Crassus has the money to support them. Not too long after he formed the first triumvirate, he was elected as consul in 59 BCE and started to conquer Gaul. He also conquered some parts of Germany and Britain.
