Jumping Over "Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail"-Ralph Waldo Emerson. In Melanie Dickerson's, The Captive Maiden the Cinderella story is retold but with dramatic twists. Gisela (the Protagonist) is a young woman at the age seventeen who has lost it all -family, friends, and hope. On a day out in town she meets a childhood acquaintance, the young duke Valten, with the re-acquaintance of Valten Gisela realizes that her life is horrid and if it is going to continue to be that way she will at least go out with having experience fun and love once more. So Gisela decides to risk everything to meet Valten at a Tournament, she wants to

Everyone has reasons for their action, something to drive them forward to certain goals and choices, Gisela is no different. Gisela's drive is leaving her cynical stepmother and finding someone who will love her for who she is, she, "want[s] to marry someone kind... someone who believes in goodness and mercy and love" (12). After being orphaned and treated completely worthless by her sole guardian, she if full of strange emotions that push her to believe certain things and want to obtain certain things. Gisela's childhood led her to have specific morals and values, that followed her into her young adult life. Gisela does everything to follow through and achieve her happiness, Evfemia -Gisela's stepmother- does everything in her power to prevent Gisela …show more content…
Since Gisela has made her choice she is well aware of the outcome that may or has occurred because of her decision. Gisela's stepmother and stepsister, "... might...do or say [anything] to try [and] destroy her night... they had ruined friendships in the past, out of jealously, and there was no telling what they might do to ruin her in the eyes of Valten" (81) Gisela's step-family is out to get her and now that Valten is paying attention to Gisela the goal of Gisela's step-family has just been amped up. The step-family decided to sell Gisela to, " a baron... [who] promised to marry [her]..." (126) they do this even after it is commonly known that Valten wants to marry Gisela. Gisela's step-family goes above and beyond their initial treat, they also help a man to kidnap Gisela, "...[she] felt herself being dragged down the corridor, away from the ball, and away from Valten" (155) so Gisela's is faced with even greater consequence but still chooses to go for it to take the chance and hope for the best outcome. If Gisela would have never gone through with chasing her happiness and love none of these things would have occurred, but Gisela would still be in the same position as before. Her stepmother would still rule over Gisela with an iron fist and probably have sold her off to be married to someone else because in the book Gisela is desired by several men but none of which were able

Throughout Elizabeth Panttaja’s article, the audience is provided with impressive mental illustrations in which portray the Cinderella society recognizes today as deceptive. The idea Pantajja is presenting to her intended audience comes from the foundation of the original Cinderella titled “Ashputtle.” Panttaja discloses that “Cinderella….has little to do with her being a standup citizen and more to do with her intense loyalty to her dead mother and a string of subversive acts; she disobeys the stepmother, enlists in forbidden helpers, uses magical powers, lies, hides, dissembles, disguises herself and evades pursuit”(Panttaja #60). The superior statement may be directly interpreted as Pantajja believes firmly that Cinderella is horribly misbehaved, disrespectful alongside deceitful.…

In “Head Cook at Weddings and Funerals” Marusa is the daughter of Aunt Florence and one of the main characters. In the story, her wedding is coming up and Marusa chose to buy a wedding dress out of a catalogue instead of a traditional one made by her mother. For this example, Aunt Florence represents the father and the dress represents the mother. She feels “attracted” to the dress and stubbornly wants to wear it to her wedding because it’s she wants to make her own choices and be independent. Even though she knows that she probably cannot win the “fight” against the father (Aunt Florence) she still tries to fight back. Because she doesn’t succeed the “father” wins the “mother” and Marusa still had to wear the tradition dress.…

With many variations of fantasies, "Happily ever after" is reoccurring in every fairy tale. "Cinderella" by Anne Sexton is a different variation of the classic tale. The author sets up her version of Cinderella with four anecdotes sharing how others can go from poverty to riches or gritty reality to fantasy. Sexton changes her happily ever after ending by satirizing the message the story gives. By doing so, Sexton would like the reader to know the difference between a fairy tale and reality. Anne Sexton deconstructs the ending of her retold fairy tale by using sarcasm to change the reader's expectations of the story and myth.…

In Romeo and Juliet, two young lovers fall for each other, despite their familial rivalry. After a rollercoaster of emotions and predicaments, Romeo and Juliet die, unable to live without the other. The primary cause of this tragedy is their parents, who refuse to make amends or move on from the forgotten strife that started the conflict between their families, the Montagues and Capulets. As they realize that their beloved children have deceased at the conclusion of the play, Juliet’s father says, “As rich shall Romeo’s by his lady's lie,/Poor sacrifices of our enmity” (Shakespeare V.iii.314-315). People often lose sight of what is important in life and texts such as Romeo and Juliet act as powerful means of bringing readers back to what is truly fundamental. Holding grudges results in no happiness or virtue, but rather takes away from the families more than they ever expected. The same is true in “The Necklace,” as the readers watch Mathilde attempt to attain a sense of wealth, only to have more taken away from her. The text explains how she often thinks to herself, imagining “what would have happened if she had not lost that necklace...How life is strange and changeful!” (de Maupassant 5). De Maupassant reveals Mathilde’s realization of the true luxuries she had taken for granted and lost. This gives the…

In my short analysis of “Cindarella”, understanding the basic concepts of the story was not as easy as I had once predicted. The author Elisabeth Panttaja explains in her essay different views and ideas in the sense that Cinderella is successful because of the magical powers created by her dead mother. The author tells that “It is not suprising . . . that modern criticism of (Cinderella) . . . has been so strangely indifferent to the roles that Cinderella’s mother plays in the story.” This to my knowledge is giving me a different view on how people thought Cinderella acted to the situations that occurred.…

Isabella, originally on the verge of becoming a nun, finds herself about to marry the Duke. It is interesting that she is not given a chance to respond to the Duke's marriage proposal in the play. She is assumedly very happy to become the wife of the town's leader, particularly since he has saved her brother's life. But at the same time this situation reinforces her loss of sexual independence. The central conflict in the play revolves around Isabella's refusal to follow the ways of most of the women in Vienna. Her marriage to the Duke confirms her virtue while denying her…

In all these versions, readers or viewers find a common thread to all. The wicked stepmother and siblings are either punished or forgiven, while the sweet, gracious, and beautiful Cinderella marries the prince, and as such escapes her miserable life. According to this tale, marriage is the ultimate goal in life especially for the woman. In Cinderella, all the maidens in town go to the ball just to marry the prince. Even Cinderella desires to go because she sees marriage to the prince as the solution to her problem. “The ideological and psychological pattern and message of either Perrault’s or the Grimms’ Cinderella do nothing more than reinforce sexist values and a Puritan ethos that serves a society which fosters competition and achievement for survival” (Breaking the Magic 195). And this applies to the other two versions in this analysis. Women are typecast as incomplete and invisible without the prince, who obviously is a wealthy archetype. There is a certain important message in Cinderella that is most profitable to marry a rich man, because it earns the woman respect and dignity.…
