Junior was born on the spokane reservation. Junior was born with a disease where he had too much cerebral spinal fluid in his skull. This is the first example of what it means to be the “only one” because this disease made him “funny looking.” “ first of all i ended up having 42 teeth the typical human only has 32 teeth, ten more than usual.” “my brain damage left me nearsighted in one eye and my hands and feet were giant.” This is the first thing that makes junior the “Only One”. In this situation being the “only one” is hard and embarrassing because it makes Junior stick out and makes him different from everyone else.

Junior struggles throughout the book but in the end he pushes through and comes out stronger than everyone else. There are many struggles when being the “only one”, but there are also sometimes good aspects.
