Just Lather That's All Summary
In the short story “Just Lather, That's All”, all three types of irony are presented. The first irony I noticed was verbal irony. In the text it says “A man of imagination, because who else would have thought of hanging the naked rebels and then holding target practice on their bodies?” which is an example of verbal irony. This means that what is said is not what is actually meant. As readers, we know that the barber is a rebel himself and Captain Torres is his enemy. Torres is hunting down the rebels which obviously angers the barber therefore he would not have genuinely complimented him. The barber saying that Torres is a man of imagination is really a mockery and means that his idea of hanging naked rebels is quite frankly a horrible idea

The definition of a coward is one to show fear, the barber shows he is a coward by being afraid, seconding guessing himself, and showing weakness. When the captain walks into the barber shop he begins to quiver on the spot, therefore showing how fearful his is of the captain. For example “When I recognized him I started to tremble.” The barber without a doubt is showing terror. When you’re brave and courageous you never doubt yourself and stick to your guns, however the barber does not. In other words, when you plan on doing something you should never back down. On the other hand the barber does back down. For instance, “But what would I do with the body? Where would I hide it? I would have to flee…” Here he begins to think about what would happen if he did kill the captain and therefore leading him to not kill. In addition, the barber says “No one deserves to have someone else make the sacrifice of becoming a murderer.” In other words he is trying to say he doesn’t deserve to be the one to kill him and be called a murderer. Finally, the barber gives off vulnerability by thinking of reducing the amount of pain and suffering to the captain. For example, the barber thinks to himself “I'm sure that one solid stroke, one deep incision, would prevent any pain. He wouldn't suffer.” Caring for the enemy and trying to minimize the amount of pain they will have is true acts of a coward. In conclusion being fearful, doubting oneself, and giving off weakness is a sure fire sign of a coward.…

Secondly, the barber would have been a coward because he would have to flee leaving all he had behind. He was well aware that he would have to run and thus he made a statement, “I would have to flee, leaving all I had behind, and take a refuge far away” (51). He would have to run, saving himself from Torres’ people. As he would have killed the captain cowardly, he had to hide his face from the society. He would have to find places to hide himself from Torres’ people. He might also have to lose his job. Furthermore, the barber would have been a coward because, he was vulnerable. He was weak and afraid of killing captain Torres, especially with his eyes open. Thus, when the captains’ eyes were closed, he whispered, “I could cut his throat just so – Zip, Zip! I would not give him time to resist and since his eyes were closed he would not see the glistening blade and my glistening eyes” (50). The barber would have thought that as the captains’ eyes were closed he might not come to know about his thoughts. The barber would even not give him the chance to perform any such actions which would create problems for him. Thus all such thoughts of the barber, about killing the…

Irony is a literary technique, originally used in Greek tragedy. In the story, The Pedestrian Bradbury uses irony to write the whole story. Mr. Mead wasn’t doing anything wrong, he was just walking and yet he was arrested. Another example of irony is in the story Fahrenheit 451 when he explains the fireman’s theory. “Plant the books, turn in the alarm, and see the fireman’s houses burn, is that what you mean?” (85). The wrong is so obvious in both of these examples but things that are wrong still happen and irony is used to make us see these wrongs…

One of the three types of irony is verbal irony. Verbal irony is when the use of words means something different. A real life example is… YAY IT’S MONDAY! You aren’t really glad that it’s Monday it’s like exaggeration. In the short story of The Cask of Amontillado, I was reading and I notice to examples of verbal irony. One is “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge. And the second one is “Amontillado? A pipe? Impossible! And not in the middle of the fair” (Poe 61 62).…

In the story Lather and Nothing Else by Hernando Téllez, the barber should not have killed commander Torres. When the barber asked how many prisoners they took, Commander Torres answered, “Fourteen, we had to go pretty far into the forest to get them.” Which implies that he has many men so if he ever died they would just get a new leader. This leader could be good or bad, but we don't know and not knowing gives the possibility that it could be worse. At the end of the story, he says, “that it's hard to kill”, meaning he doesn't enjoy it a lot, but there could be somebody who would.…

Verbal irony by definition is when someone states one thing and means another; an incongruity between what is said and what is meant. Twain uses verbal irony in his novel when the band of robbers are discussing the meaning of “ransoming.” Tom says, “Well I don't know, but perhaps if we keep them till they're ransomed, it means we keep them until they're dead.” (Twain 12) All of the boys in the gang immediately agreed upon this definition with Tom. This is an example of satire because Twain is trying to show that though something may be wrong, if society believes it to be true, then it may conform to the “truth.” The verbal irony of this is how Tom is stating what he believes to be ransoming, but not actually knowing what it is to ransom. I believe this shows how ignorant as well as dependent on others out civilization can be.…

Just Lather, that’s all is a short story written by Hernando Tellez. It is about the conflict between a rebel disguised as a barber and an executioner in a war-torn-shop. Having been secretly affected by the harsh punishments of the executioner and his army, the barber finds himself conflicted about having Captain Torres’s life in his hands. While shaving Captain Torres’s beard, the barber decided to spare him his life because he is against murder, but is worried that his people may take him for a coward rather than merciful. At the end of the story we find out that the Captain knew that the barber was a rebel the entire time he was in the shop; he then calls the barber out for not being strong enough of a person to kill him and walks out.…

Captain Torres and The Barber both vaule their jobs, in one way Captain Torres values his job by killing people without a second thought because it is his job. "But we did all right, you know. We got the main ones. We brought back some dead, we've got some others still alive. But pretty soon they'll all be dead". This is showing that Captain Torres values his job in every way and do whatever it takes to keep his job his. The Barber also values his job when he receives Captain Torres as one of his clients in his barber shop. "And i perform my work honorably....i dont want blood on my hands". This shows that as much as The Barber does not like Captain Torres he still cuts his hair because it is…

“Just Lather, That’s All” tends to set confliction in the minds of its readers. “The day he ordered the whole town to file into the patio of the school to see the four rebels hanging there, I came face to face with him for an instance. But the sight of the mutilated bodies kept me from noticing the face of the man who had directed it all, the face I was about to take into my hands,” said the barber. This quote shows the barber’s realization and emotion over the situation. “On the other hand I, with his razor in my hands, stroking and restroking his skin, trying to keep blood from oozing from these pores, can’t even think clearly. Curse him for coming, because I’m a revolutionary and not a murderer. And how easy it would be to kill him. And he deserves it. Does he? No! No one deserves to have someone else make the sacrifice of becoming a murderer. What do you gain by it? Nothing,” he thinks. This shows precisely the confliction and confusion of the barber’s emotions on the subject of murder.…

The theme of morality, which also ties in with heroism. The barbers morals are set into play as soon as the captain walks through the door. There are good and bad morals within both situations. Killing a man is bad morals but the reason for it might not be. As well as letting him go is good morals but against his own beliefs. This was the highest test of morality for the barber and in the end he is filled with mostly good morals. But would he of been a hero if he'd killed him? In a way yes, the revolutionaries would win but only for a matter of time. The government would get another captain soon after and the barber would be executed before even the search. Maybe he is, for not going through with it a strong, respectful man, a…
